The first book I borrowed from the CMIS library, at the time I still mostly read horse books. This was a good one though!

I loved this story and was totally taken by the horse romance between Sham and Lady Roxana. As with most Marguerite Henry books that I read, I acquired the Breyer Horses to go along with the books for birthdays and Christmas.

I was one of those kids obsessed with horses and I adored Misty of Chincoteague so much. So I knew going in I would like this book since its by the same author. Honestly I'm surprised I never read this as a child. This reminded me a lot of the 1927 winner Smokey the Cowhorse only it wasn't written from the horse's perspective. Another one I would recommend to any horse loving kids today!

A fun, touching story based on the life of the horse from whom most modern-day thoroughbreds are descended. A great read-aloud for horse enthusiasts and fascinating history brought to life.

I really liked this one. That was surprising since the last few Newbery's I read were pretty disappointing. In some ways this appears to be an American version of Black Beauty, set in Morocco, Paris, and London. However, Sham and Agba really appealed to me. I feel they, and Grimalkin of course, are more relatable to the child audience they were created for. I forgot how much I like Marguerite Henry's writing style.

Perhaps the best of the Henry books. Again, this hardback edition has gorgeous illustrations.
