Light and charming, like everything Ruth Reichl writes.

Book club pick for August. I thought this was fine. Pros: well-paced, not too long, colorful (if one-dimensional) characters. Cons: I didn’t relate to the protagonist, who seemed unrealistically undeveloped as a person, and the story arc was somewhat predictable.

i felt that the characters weren’t very well written and some parts of the story didn’t make sense (the childhood assault ??? Didn’t really have any merit to the story) it makes sense that the author is a chef as the most well written parts of the book were about food. Wanted to get lost in the story but felt distracted the entire time by the poor writing

About halfway through, I chose to let go of my expectations of this book being a literary success and instead chose to view it as a tour book and brief history of Paris told through narrative. In this way I found it quite enjoyable. But the characters were not particularly well developed, the plot was meandering, and, on its whole, the book was far from revelatory.

I would recommend for all foodies and anyone interested in Paris culture (especially related to Shakespeare and Co!) or visiting Paris, but would caution that you keep your literary expectations low.
