DID NOT FINISH: 92%

I got this book as a gift from my aunt as inspiration for our upcoming trip to Paris. This is a cookbook author’s first attempt at fiction. I felt similarly to how I felt trying Hannah Brown’s romance attempt at that there are so many specific references to Paris or names that it felt like someone was cosplaying as an author. Once James Baldwin showed up as a character in this novel… I was over it. Felt like reading the “Eat Pray Love” version of “Midnight in Paris”. Also let’s not normalize dropping traumatic events within the first 50 pages of a book as a character’s motivation. We do not need to start a book with child abuse and not have any follow-up or trigger warning.

Loved first half, second half seemed a bit silly and contrived.
