this was so sweet! i wanted to like it more than i did, but it felt really juvenile (just because of the talking cats). it brought me back to my warrior cat days. i liked it, but felt a bit bored by the writing style. overall, very cute but wasn’t for me!!

A series of four interconnected stories about women who live near each other and their cats. These stories are lovely and poignant. The accompanying artwork that precedes each story is beautiful. Favorite line: “It’s your life, and you have to make sure you keep enough of it for yourself.”
5⭐️ this was so lovely and heartwarming showing how cats can get you through dark and difficult times in life. I really liked it.

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this but I really liked it! It was a short cute book about cats and how they impact peoples lives. The guy who made Your Name wrote it so I had to check it out. Apparently it’s an anime? Or was an anime first? I have to watch it! The translator was also really good, it felt quite smooth as a translated text, and makes me kind of want to try Convenience Store Woman.
I liked the images at the start of a new section, the cover is also gorgeous. The title as well is really poignant.
It was simple but so expertly done how all of the lives interconnected in the stories. The first one with Chobi really ensnared me. It was so cool having both the cats perspective and the persons. The things the cats would do at times or their reasoning made so much sense for a cat.
Something I really liked about it was how the setting gripped me and made it feel real.
Chobi being in that box

I absolutely ADORED this book. The final chapter was a bit harder for me to remain interested in, but the epilogue brought me right back in.
It is obvious that "Japanese books about cats" is definitely one of my favourite literary genres. This is a collection of 4 connected short stories (so the best kind) taking place in a neighbourhood, from the perspective of very sweet kitties, a very philosophical old dog and their humans. It made me cry and it made me even more grateful for my own furball of love and empathy.
It is wholesome, sensitive, sweet and human.

Even though the writing was inconsistent, the stories really did show how cats change our lives for the better. The section breaks between scene changes and povs were a little confusing, but I liked the cat's inner monologue and how each story was connected someway.
my rating for each story:
1. Sea of Words: 2 stars
I really liked Miyu as a character and looking into her life. But I don't understand her character arc involved with her cat or why the ending was so abrupt.
2. First Blossoming: 4 stars
Loved Reina and Mimi's relationship and how their lives mirrored each other. In my opinion, the best story in the book.
3. Slumber and Sky: 3 stars
While it has a good theme and an interesting premise, it was a little forgettable. The whole bracelet thing was very cute and portrayed depression and grief in a realistic way though.
4. The Temperature of the World: 3 stars
I really wanted closure for this character because i was empathetic and invested. But her journey with her cat fell short and is more focused on her nephew if anything.
thx for reading <3
