DID NOT FINISH

I got this on kindle—for too much money—and I was immediately put off by the writing. It was so bad. But to make it worse, this story appears like it was written by a tween. It is so fast-paced, the characters are over-dramatic and non-sensical (not to mention the plot).
I didn't go into this book expecting it to be so bad. I had no clue about the controversy surrounding Goodkind until after I DNF'd this book, as I was a big fan of the T.V. show that is based off this book series—it was filmed in NZ, my home, and I was missing home at the time and have no problem with fun and action-packed fantasy shows (even if the writing isn't awesome), but this book was an immediate no. Was very disappointed, but after learning more about Goodkind, I don't feel very inclined to pick this series up and try again. I think it would be a waste of time, and would cost me more than I'm willing to give.

What the hell was that? Sucked in by some intriguing characters, setting and story lines only to fall into some junior high school, romance, angst, which made me gag frequently. Even with the retching I was constantly wondering what was coming next. 2/3 of the way through the book the adventurers/saviours found what they were looking for, being a savy reader and seeing how many pages I had left, I knew something bad was about to happen to turn their fortunes. What it was, I couldn't guess. Ummm, again, WTF?

I am traipsing along an almost young adult fantasy novel with its simple moralizations and even more basic characterizations when a large black pit opens up and I fall into some sort of sado-masochistic nightmare. Physical pain, psychological pain, brain washing, I wasn't expecting that section. Then bang! We make friends with a dragon. That reminds me of Mae West...bang! We go back to the sickeningly sweet love story and then the happy ending.

Parts I loved, parts I didn't exactly hate, but could have done without, made this a 3 1/2 star bumped up to 4 stars only because of what happens to the brother at the end. I really hate the complete forgiveness part at the end of so many of these stories and I applaud Goodkind for being brave enough to do what needed doing. I am however terrified to read more books for fear the S+M parts start taking over.

I did listen to this all the way through, but several times I nearly quit. The all powerful good guys fell down on the job at every turn, there was mis-communication at a Shakespearean level, and Gollum showed up in the middle of the book.

I loved this book! Wizards, sexy heroes, mystical creatures, grande adventures and magic powers!' How can you possibly go wrong?!
