I am probably not the intended audience, and I tried to like this a lot, as I usual like in verse books, but this just didn't work for me. It read very scattered to me, and I just wasn't very invested in the whole story line.

i've been eyeing this in waterstones for weeks so when i did a lil "i have covid and it's double points, time to treat myself" online shop, this was the first book i added to basket and i'm so glad i did.
it's so beautifully and lyrically written in verse with words left unsaid to be read between the lines and wonderful, odd imagery (and it's gay!!) i wasn't expecting vampires (i'll be honest, i was too taken by the cover to research it) but it's not cliche at all and is actually a really stunning concept !!

I've decided, upon recent events, to designate a shelf for cozy horror. The motifs are there, the want, the hunger, the need for blood--but god, is it romantic. It's nice, it's calm, it's just a fact. Why should being a vampire stop Immy for wanting more? All she wants is love, really. So when Claudia offers her a yellow rose, Immy falls head-over-heels for the girl who smells like paint and tea.

With lyrical, at times playful, verse, Grehan constructs a narrative that is so compelling because it is so emotional. She deftly teases out Immy's family rules, the way they conduct themselves around others, the way they love each other. She offers the ways in which Claudia loves Immy and Immy allows herself to be in love with tentative, well-chosen vocabulary.

This is not a book about vampires. It's a book about first loves. Puberty. Growing pains. It's so much more than bloodlust.

This was my first verse novel and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It was a very engaging way of getting into this character's head. Experiencing the day-to-day life of Immy is tense and mysterious. It was a bit confusing and vague at times but it did add to the unsettling feeling. The way hunger is used to represent desire is done in a very interesting way. It's hard to make a vampire story feel unique but this one surely was.

It's also a fairly easy read since it's a verse novel. It's not dense while still being medium-paced. I finished it in just 2 nights. About 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.

Now this would be a 4 star if these interesting ideas surrounding her individuality and implied multiplicity were explored more. By the end, it didn't feel like I figured anything out about the story or world. I was still invested in the characters yet the ending felt unceremonious.
also a bit confusing on whether the characters stay together or not due to its vagueness.
However there is an interview with the author in the book stating there may be more to the series. So ill be keeping my eye out for that.

Another thing that didn't fully resonate with me is the style of verse. At times some sentence splits felt unnecessary/took away from the weight of the line. I would liken it to Milk and Honey at times and if that's not your thing I don't think this will be for you.
