Di questa autrice ho già letto La lettera e mi era piaciuto tantissimo.
Anche questo libro mi è piaciuto, anche se differente e simile per alcuni versi.
Altro caso, per questo mese di novembre, di racconto con parallelo temporale della trama.
E' il 1975, Mary e Thomas sono una giovane coppia, innamorata sin dall'infanzia. Da qualche anno cercano di avere un bambino ma ogni volta, il sogno di Beth di diventare madre si infrange. Ma questa volta sente che andrà diversamente. Thomas lavora in una miniera di carbone. Il lavoro è pericoloso e promette alla moglie che lo lascerà nel caso in cui lei sia incinta, per prendere il suo posto nella gestione della pensione che gestisce e anche, direi, per evitare i pericoli.
Mary ha ragione, aspetta il bambino tanto atteso. Ma la gioia dura poco: svegliata nel cuore della notte da una telefonata, scopre che il marito ha avuto un incidente e che non c'è più niente da fare. Bloccato nella miniera, insieme ai colleghi, sin da subito si comprende che nessuno è sopravvissuto.
La disperazione farà perdere il bambino a Mary.
Si salta al presente: altra coppia, Beth e Michael. Beth è la figlia di Mary.... Dopo il funerale della madre corrono in ospedale dal figlio Jake, malato e bisognoso di un trapianto di reni, per poter continuare a vivere. Nessuno dei due genitori è compatibile.
Qualche giorno dopo Beth trova la forza di andare a casa della madre e mettere un po' d'ordine tra le sue carte e trova qualcosa di sorprendente: una lettera e un ritaglio di giornale, un articolo riguardante un tragico incidente avvenuto molti anni prima.
Ritorniamo così indietro nel tempo e conosciamo un gruppo di amici e conoscenti: Selwin, Babs, Trisha, Daisy, Lorraine e Petula e il piccolo Mikey.
Facciamo conoscenza con loro, sono legati dall'amicizia e dalla parentela, ma anche dal destino.... l'incidente riguarda proprio loro. Di ritorno da una giornata passata insieme, una gita al mare, avranno questo incidente che causerà la morte di Petula e del padre di Mikey.
Passiamo la giornata con loro: non la ricorderemo solo per l'incidente ma anche per un altro evento; nel bel mezzo del pomeriggio Petula si sente male e, nel bagno di un pub, da alla luce una bambina. Tra l'incredulità dell'amica Lorraine e la fermezza di Daisy, non si farà convincere a tenere la bambina. Perché se l'avesse fatto.... la piccola non sarebbe mai diventata da grande ...Beth...
Daisy non sa cosa fare, non vuole portarla in ospedale, così mentre si incammina vede una pensione e una signora che potrebbe accoglierla. Ma chi sarà? Eh si, proprio Mary!
Il cerchio sembra chiudersi, ma non è ancora proprio così.
Perché gli anni passano, le storie si intrecciano ancor di più. Mikey che non viene mai accudito dalla madre viene preso sotto l'ala protettrice di Daisy che ritrova la gioia di avere un bambino in casa.
In effetti qui c'è un punto un po' strano: il figlio di Daisy scompare improvvisamente dalla storia, sembra morto ma non si parla di lui tra le vittime. Io ero convinta che fosse morto ma è semplicemente volato in Australia, sconvolto dall'incidente che ha quasi causato e che ricompare alla fine, perché, come scopriremo dalla storia, è il vero padre di Beth!
E non dimentichiamoci di Mikey che cresciuto ... diventa Michael, il marito di Beth a padre di Jake.
Una serie di legami che sconvolgeranno le loro vite e che allo stesso tempo darà loro la speranza di salvare il piccolo Jake.
Una storia delicata e intrigante allo stesso tempo, piena di questi colpi di scena, a volte intuibili, altre no, che tiene incollata alle pagine, perché la voglia di andare avanti è tanta!

I absolutely loved The Letter by this author so was very excited when I saw she had a new novel out and have been dying to read it.
As with The Letter, The Secret is also told through characters in the present day as well as returning to the past so that we can find out what secrets had been kept and why.
The whole story line revolves around two tragedies which in turn has affected the characters that have been left behind. The tragedies in themselves are heart breaking enough but it's with out a doubt the people that are left behind and how they are affected that really had an impact on me.
I could very much feel the pain of Beth and Michael and how desperate they were getting in trying to find a donor for their little boy. Beth has so much to deal with as it is, to lose her mother at the same time was really quite tragic. Going through her mothers stuff though after she has died, she comes across something that changes everything and in away gives her hope but also leaves her questioning everything about her past.
There were quite a few characters in this novel that I was really drawn to like Babs and little Mikey. Some certainly stand out more than others and even though I had empathy with some of them, I do wish some of them had acted differently.
I have to admit as much as I loved this story, I really struggled with getting my head around how some of the characters acted when finding out a certain secret. I think what happens with Pertula's father was something that may have been avoided, also Daisy, as much as I loved her character, again I couldn't understand her actions. I certainly think it is quite a thought provoking read that will challenge readers emotions.
The Secret is without a doubt a gripping and emotional read. There are quite a few surprises that really makes this book impossible to put down as I was totally caught up in the characters lives. Though I may not have agreed with some of the characters actions, The Secret is a wonderful and memorable read that will stay with me for a long time.

One of my favorite authors! Her books are very captivating and although it follows several different peoples perspective, its done tastefully.

Igatsesin väga vahelduseks üht ajaviiteromaani ning leidsin riiulist lugemiseks lakoonilise pealkirjaga Kathryn Hughes'i romaani "Saladus", mille sisukirjeldus kohe huvi äratas. Igasugused saladused ja müsteerumid on ju raamatutes alati põnevad.
1975-2016, Blackpool & Manchester. Jake on haige ning vajab hädasti neerudoonorit, kuid kumbki poisi vanematest ei sobi. Tema ema Beth ajab meeleheitlikult sugulasi taga. Ta ei tea, kes ta isa oli, sest naise ema viis surres selle saladuse endaga hauda. Kui Bethil õnnestub emast mahajäänud asjade seast leida vana kiri ning ajaleheartikkel õnnetusest, mis heidavad valgust 40 aasta tagustele sündmustele, tekib tal lootus, et ta suudab välja selgitada, kes oli ta isa ning leida mõned sugulase.
"Saladus" ei olnud siiski päris minu maitse järgi raamat. Kui juba saladustest juttu tuleb, siis eelistan võimalikult mitmetahulist lugu, mis iga pöördega jalust rabab. Saladusi jagus küll õhukesse romaani üllatavalt palju ja paar pööret olid täitsa ootamatud, kuid lugu ise jäi ikka liiga lihtsaks ja ettearvatavaks.
Lisaks kannatab raamat liiga suure tegelaste hulga all, mistõttu jäid kõik väga üheplaanilisteks ja ei ärganud lehtedelt ellu. Igaüks oli nagu oluline vaid selle rolli poolest, mis tal sündmustiku kulgemisel kanda oli ning muu inimlik pool oli puudu. Minu jaoks muutis see kogu loo ebareaalseks. Kõige rohkem häiris mind, et kaks naist olid loos ainult selleks, et lugejas vastumeelsust tekitada. Neid näidati ainult negatiivsest küljest, ilma igasuguse inimlikkuseta.
Kuna mul ühegi tegelasega sidet ei tekkinud ja suuremad šokid olid etteaimatavad, ei tekitanud lugu minus ka erilisi emotsioone. Kõige rohkem meeldis mulle lugeda hoopis 1970. aastate elukorraldusest Inglismaal, eriti Blackpoolis suvitamisest. Mulle tundus väga võõrana mõte eesliga mööda randa sõita, aga tuleb välja, et kunagi olid sellised meelelahutused. Veel sai aimu tollasest riietusstiilist, sest pisiasjade kirjeldamisele pöörati totralt palju tähelepanu, näiteks ühel tegelasel oli haihambaga kaelakee.
"Saladus" ei olnud iseenesest halb raamat, sest saladused ja nii-nimetatud loo skelett olid täitsa korralikud, aga liha jäi luudelt kõvasti puudu. Kõigest sellest oleks saanud palju nauditavama ja paksema raamatu, kui tegelasi oleks rohkem arendatud, et nad mõjuksid reaalsemana.
"Saladus" räägib mittetöötavatest neerudest, isaotsingutest, bussiõnnetusega lõppenud lõbusast päevast ja muidugi saladustest. If you love family drama this book is for you.
I had to read for more than 100pages for something interesting to finally happen. The author took her time to present the characters their relationships and stories, some might find it good but I found it so boring. Overall the last chapters were what made me give it 3stars.

I really wish I could give this book more than five stars. It was absolutely brilliant. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Het geheim - Kathryn Hughes (the house of Books)
De waarheid die ze wegstopte, zal de redding betekenen voor een andere vrouw
Mary heeft een geheim. Veertig jaar geleden maakte ze een keuze die niet alleen haar wereld, maar ook het pad van iemand die haar dierbaar is voor altijd zou veranderen.
Beth is op zoek naar antwoorden. Ze heeft nooit de waarheid over haar afkomst gekend, maar het kan de redding zijn die haar zieke kind zo hard nodig heeft. Wanneer Beth een oude, verkleurde krant tussen de spullen van haar moeder vindt, beseft ze dat de sleutel tot de toekomst van haar zoon in haar eigen verleden ligt. Ze moet teruggaan naar waar het allemaal begon... Het geheim.
Iets waar deze uitgeverij sterk in is, is in het uitgeven van heerlijke roman/feelgood boeken. Al bij het bekijken van de cover, de titel en de flaptekst weet je dat dit een lees zal worden met de nodige emoties maar met een fijn einde.
Ik had nog geen boeken gezien van deze auteur maar wil na deze lees absoluut de sleutel gaan lezen. De cover van de sleutel is alvast in lijn met deze cover wat dan weer heerlijk matchende is op de boekenplank.
De schrijfstijl is echt enorm vlot, je leest en leest en voor je het beseft ben je halverwege het boek. Katherine Hughes zorgt er dus ook voor de je aandacht er steeds bijblijft, er zijn geen mindere momentjes en je kan gewoon lekker meedeinen op de golven van dit boek.
Wat een mooi verhaal ook, een echte feelgood met de nodige portie drama. Meerder personages zonder dat het verwarrend gaat worden, geheimen die stilaan bloot komen te liggen, emoties die van blijdschap naar verschrikking gaan, alle elementen op succes zijn aanwezig.
Meegevoerd worden doorheen een verhaal waarin verlies maar ook geluk centraal staat, waar je de hartzeer maar ook de vreugde kan voelen, waar een traan en een lach dicht bij elkaar liggen om af te sluiten met een warm gevoel, dat is het geheim.
Ik heb enorm genoten van deze lees, was volledig ontspannen tijdens het lezen, sloot het boek met een fijn gevoel. De ideale lees tijdens enkele dagen vrijaf of tijdens het weekend met de zon op je gezicht maar evengoed ideaal tijdens een regenachtige dag op de bank met een dekentje.
