adventurous dark funny medium-paced

This is the fifth and final book in the series with a quirky and bittersweet conclusion to the adventures of Arthur Dent. Narrated with Martin Freeman’s dry wit and charm he manages to again capture Adams' trademark humour and absurdity while delivering a darker, more reflective tone than earlier instalments.

The characters are familiar and hilarious on each of their adventures and sometimes the plot can feel a little disjointed however this is part of the world of Adams which is the most enjoyable. While not as lighthearted as the first books, it still offers plenty of sharp, entertaining moments that make it worth a listen for Hitchhiker enthusiasts.

The last reread of the HHGG books before I read the new one, plus the book I'll be reviewing for Mark's Retro Reading Challenge.

Finished, again, March 2010. Still liked this one, but can admit now that it is *very* disjointed, and spends a lot of time building up to a fairly dumb gag at the end. Don't care though--it's too funny elsewhere to mind that.

i wish i had stopped after book 1

Probably my least favourite of the original Hitchhiker books. Yes, there are scores and scores of very amusing individual scenes in it but as a whole it just feels way too disjointed. I know all the books in the series are a bit like that but this one really takes it to the extremes.

Also pretty meh. I think the fun of the first three books is Arthur being thrown around the galaxy in his bathrobe and having no idea what to do with it. At this point he's experienced and jaded, and the snappy observations about culture and society aren't there anymore. Oh well. I guess that pointless ending is also part of the point.

Definitely the worst of the Douglas Adam’s books, but had a few redeeming moments.
