Ursula Le Guin you are one of the best to ever do it.

Ok so I knew somewhere in the back of my mind that Left Hand of Darkness was in a series, but now that I've read book one, I need to read the whole series NOW.

There is so much Sci-Fi is in the world, and most of it is pretty good but finding Sci-Fi that really moves and shakes is rare, in my opinion. Le Guin is just as well known for her Fantasy series Earthsea, and especially in Rocannon's world I see the influence of fantasy elements in the narrative. The tone of this novel is one of an ancient epic through the eyes of a modern scholar without feeling hokey or too 'Star Trek' in style. Le Guin really stresses from page one the aggressive meeting of old and new, bronze age and atomic age, legend and fact. And in the format of the series, that of every book taking place on a different planet but in the same broad setup of a connected universe of hundreds of planets, she has so much room to breathe and explore concepts in her usual rigorous way.

This was a beautiful short novel and it read more like mythology than it did sci-fi. Beautiful descriptions, and deeply lovable characters. I really enjoyed this read.

A somewhat paint by numbers fantasy story with a coat of very sheer sci-fi paint, I found symilar issue with this as with Farthest shore, it's a disjointed kinda forgettable meandering journey until you get to the point, but I do think the ending is very successful.
Her bending of traditional fantasy races is interesting even if the world feels shallow at times. The winged creatures in the latter part of the book were a highlight.

Not my first recommendation for leguin but it was nice to see where she started out, so much of what would one day make her great is still identifiable, her imagination and ability to write grounded people from disparate cultures is perticulaly impressive.
