This book is excellent. It's the kind of book that makes you annoyed with all the past ratings you have given to books as you need to downgrade them all to make room for it at the top.
Should have 6 stars, it was excellent.
I did read this straight after reading Enders Game so that might have contributed to it being so good. Really interesting to see another side to the same story.

Honestly, I liked this better than Ender's Game. It wasn't that I didn't like Ender, but I found Bean's story more interesting. I enjoyed hearing about how he survived in the streets, and how he always discerned everything there was to be discerned. Plus, it's always more interesting to hear the other side of the story. I loved hearing everything from Bean's POV and matching it up with Ender's story. Bean was much more a part of Ender's success than even Ender realized.

Even though it covers a lot of the same time period as Ender’s Game, this book is well worth the reading. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Almost as good as ender’s game (nothing can compare) and the guesses Bean was able to form with the limited information was believable and entertaining. My one gripe was that it minimized Ender’s skills in the final formic battles in favor of propping up Bean, which didn’t sit right with me. For instance it said Ender was speaking incoherently and Bean had to translate for the others - Ender was tired yes but Bean would’ve been just as tired (even though his intellect might have surpassed it he was overseeing all of the battle AND his own ships, I cannot for a second believe Bean was “fresher” than Ender).
I can't even express in words how much I love this book, but I'm going to try. An easy 5 stars. I don't even wanna start another book because I'm sitting in the happy afterglow of this book. I can't stop thinking about it and I was so excited to come home so that I can write a review.
The pacing is perfect. Absolutely perfect. I love exciting books that make me race through, but then I always feel like I'm missing part of the experience. I was excited and scared and tense while reading but I still managed to hold in and absorb every word, which means a lot when I love a book. The book builds up slowly, very slowly, until you reach the amazing ending! I can already tell that I'm getting too over-excited and I won't be able to write a coherent review. ANYWAYS. I began the book slowly, gaining interest, until I couldn't put it down, but wasn't racing it through it. The emotions grabbed me and held me, and I was imagining everything so vividly. ACTUALLY, I have one complaint, and that is that the battle scenes were difficult for me to understand, but normally, the author doesn't do a lot of these. And I think it was my fault for failing to understand what was happening.
It's a coming-of-age story, but without being totally obvious about it. I love watching my characters grow up, mature, and change without it being corny or overstated. It wasn't stated at all, it was just my personal observation that all the characters grew up, learned a lesson, and became different people. It made me so happy because our protagonist isn't very likeable at first.
I already knew what was going to happen in this story, but I was still RIVETED. This a parallel novel to "Ender's Game", and it has the same basic plotline but from the viewpoint of a different character. Even so, I was NEVER bored or annoyed, and the ending was still an absolute kicker. (Seriously this book has one of the greatest twist endings ever).
This book is DEEP. The protagonist is a genius and extremely oriented towards analysis. You can see how smart the author is through the way his character acts. The writing is always intelligent.
I don't know what else to say, but this is one of my favorite books! I already loved Ender's Game but I didn't think I'd enjoy this because of the story re-hash... but I loved it. BE CAREFUL THOUGH. Orson Scott Card(the author) is a strong advocate for the protection of "TRADITIONAL" marriage(between a man and woman). I'm strongly opposed to his beliefs and I will never purchase one of his books, but I always get them from the library or secondhand book sales. I wouldn't recommend you to buy his books.

CAVEAT: I read (and enjoyed) this book before I found out about the author's views on LGBT issues. The score is for the book on its own merits.

This was an interesting counterpart to Ender's Game, telling the story from Bean's point of view.
Although the story managed to keep a new feel with familiar material, I'm giving it 3 stars because I felt the theology and Bible quotations were a little heavy-handed. Bean's worship of Ender towards the end felt like writings about Jesus in a scifi coat.
I would prefer sermonizing in fiction to be either transparent or absent. Instead, I felt like I was being guided or manipulated by the author. I won't be reading any more in this series.
