I really liked how the book was structured...between the main character's past and present...and the author recreates very grounded characters, both from our youth and as adults...but it was a little over-the-top with certain events..very much like a movie..but it would be a very solid beach read if you don't like those chic-lit books. You just have to suspend disbelief a little bit.
This one scared the pants off me, but despite the nightmares it was incredibly hard to put down and I finished it very quickly. This is the the story of the potato girl who is murdered and then turned into a rural legend after her death. Then someone else is murdered thirty years later in the exact same way and a small Vermont town is shook to its core and dirty little secrets from the past come tumbling out. Relationships, bullying, and questioning yourself in this well written, scary novel. Great book but shiver the potato girl haunted me to the very finish.

Wow! An amazing supernatural story. My mind was very captured by the "Potato Girl" character, more and more as the story went on, and the ending was very emotional.
There is a character who, when introduced, practically has a flashing neon sign over his head saying THIS IS THE KILLER. Surprise! He's the killer. Nothing really special about this book; basically reads like an extended version of a campfire ghost story.
This book was a quick and fairly entertaining read. It was one of those 3 for 2 books at Borders that had a fairly interesting premise and a pretty cover (yeah, I'm an easy mark). But in the end, I don't think that the book was any deeper and more revealing than the descriptions that you read on the back cover.
As much as you get a sense of the town that they lived in (more so from Kate's observations as an adult returning to her hometown), the characters themselves just seemed to be caricatures, particularly Del. I don't think that the author really delved deep enough into Del's world and her family life. I felt like she could have spent a little bit more time in the '70's telling the story of the the girls friendship, expanding on their relationship and giving some additional background on some of the items that she just glossed over towards the end. I think she could have really given these characters some meat instead she just kind of scratched the surface.

Давно я не читала таких скучных мистических детективов.
So I'm 8 and a half months pregnant and chase my 21 month old toddler all day which makes mama pretty tired, but somehow I couldn't pry myself away from this book last night until I had read through to the last page in the wee hours! It completely captivated me. It was slightly spooky with dashes of mystery and really kept me turning pages. It was thoroughly enjoyable right until the very end. Great book!
