This book is about hawks and grief and how we can lose ourself in the peace of wild things but we have to remember the way back. Her grief for her Father weaves in and out of her story of training her haw Mable. It was beautiful and touching but somehow often clinical as well. I enjoyed the the way she examines the landscape we see and compares it to what's actually there. It was a lovely, reflective and beautifully written book.

This is a hard one to summarize. It's nonfiction that reads a bit like fiction. It's a book almost as much about her as it is about birds as it is about T.H. White and his stories. I enjoyed a number of the parts about her but kind of skimmed over the bird terminology and was on and off in my interest in White's story.
Brutally honest memoir about a woman's father's death and training a goshawk--combined with the history of T.H. White, author of The Once and Future King.
A complicated, magical book. Highly recommend.
I listened to this on audio, read by the author in a perfectly charming British accent. Recommend audio.

This was a beautiful book, but I wish I’d read a physical copy instead of listening to an audiobook. My own audiobook habits are a bit too distracted for literary fiction, I usually do best listening to books that are based more on vibe than plot like thrillers and romance novels. I wish I’d given this more of a chance on paper instead of half listening to it over the span of several weeks. Maybe I’ll download an ebook one day for a re-read and then I’ll feel like I can actually rate it
Audio book read by author. She was awesome. The book was fascinating. Sometime I would daydream away from the story during detailed sections about falconry, but overall it was captivating (if a little depressing). Liked how it was told in alongside the story of T H White and his life and attempt at having a goshawk.
This book is mesmerising. Part memoir, part biography, part elegy, mainly a tribute to the wild creatures who share this planet with us. Written with elegance, poetic force and searing honesty, this book will stay with me for a long time.

an extremely well written and profound personal journey filled with amazing insight and personality
Almost no structure but a delight to read anyway if you're interested in falconry at all.
This is a beautifully and simply written book about one woman's struggle with grief and a baby hawk, respectively.
This is a true story and I found her words about mourning to be emotionally stirring. I did not cry, but I could feel her pain.
I am also in love with her baby goshawk.
