Once I started making progress I couldn’t stop reading! This book is like a roller coaster; there’s always something happening that stars ✨ requires ✨ you to turn the page. I loved watching Wes, and those around him, learn about himself and how he relates to the world around him.
Premise alone deserves a thousand stars!!!! Can’t wait to read it!

Thank you NetGalley, Anthony Nerada, and Soho Press for the ARC. This is my honest review.
This might be one of the most beautiful stories of defining positive masculinity that I've ever read.
On the outside, Wes had anger issues, he skips class and comes off as the problem kid. Inside, he's in the closet with his friends and family, struggling from trauma of an abusive father no longer in the picture, and dealing with the fear of abandonment. He's sweet, artistic, and a bit lost.
I connected with Wes on such a deep level, seeing a mirror of myself from high-school. I remembered feeling closed off, angry, explosive, pushing everyone away so they wouldn't leave me, and struggling to understand what I wanted to do with my life. This book made me cry so hard, but it felt so cathartic. It opened up feelings that I had worked through (with years of therapy) and told such a special coming of age story from a boy that isn't usually the main character. He's broody, the bad boy, and it's from his POV.
I wish I could give this 6 stars. It's perfect.

I really did love this book. It was SO high school, I felt second hand embarrassment in the beginning because of the characters and the things they’d say but i loved it, it was so authentic. I was transported back to my days of being a “punk” or “emo” kid and by the end i was completely endeared by the characters and appreciated all the song references to tracks of my youth. Super nostalgic, very teen.
I only read this because of the book club I am in and grew increasingly frustrated for us choosing this choice as a group of adults. Yes, there are cute themes of courage and not being defined by one's past, but there are also a ton of problems in this YA novel including simple factual ones (no place in the state of Ohio would a flight to NYC take three hours!!) and more mind-numbing ones regarding the wavering motives of the obnoxious characters who go by nicknames like Big Mac and Big Cheese. What really gets under my skin is how clearly the author has no basis or relatability to the protagonist, painting him as a dumb apathetic burnout, but then writing his inner thoughts as neurotic, meticulous scholar. As in many romance novels, everything was tied in way too neat of a bow, with the ultimate happy ending proceeding over the full last third of the book as the central couple break up and get back together five times.
Combat, I'm ready for combat
I say I don't want that, but what if I do?

I've got a hundred thrown-out speeches I almost said to you

TLDR: he was a skater boy, he said "I like a bad boy with complex emotional trauma who won't treat me right for at least a year until he realizes how to communicate his thoughts as verbal speech."
