LEVAR BURTON...READS... THE BIO... OF MR. ROGERS! My inner child's soul could barely take the warm, fuzzy blanket of nostalgia. I do get little hits of nostalgia here and there when I listen to the LeVar Burton Reads podcast, but then they go combining my two favorite personalities from my childhood?! If I didn't have to function as an adult, I would have much preferred to listen to the 14 hrs and 7 mins straight through in my pjs and snuggled in bed with some tea, but...life, work, and bills, you know.
A great, in-depth profile of one of my favorite people from my childhood. I appreciated how the author took the time to research and include the background of the people who helped Fred Rogers throughout his life to become FRED ROGERS. LeVar does a good job of adjusting his voice to reflect the change in perspective, from the author to another person's commentary. It sounds like LeVar listened to a recording of that person and tried to do his best to "imitate" that person's manner of speaking.
* I got to listen to about 13 hours of this audiobook before my Hoopla (audiobook) app started acting up and wouldn't let me continue- it has the propensity to do this almost every time I'm close to the end of a book (argh!)- but the timeline had made it beyond Fred's funeral & into some of his legacy, so I don't feel too terribly cheated as far as content.

Fred Rogers was such a beautiful soul. I grew up watching him, and it is nice to know he was exactly how he appeared on The Neighborhood.
Fred Rogers was an interesting guy and this book goes into great detail as to why he was such a great figure in American education. He never lost the innocence of childhood and saw so many things through the eyes of a child, which is what made him special. His love for children, and the art of making them feel loved and accepted, is something that we still need today. He taught us so much, and the book gives numerous examples of simple things that make a big impact on the life of another. His upbringing was of particular interest to me. His parents, especially his mother, had a HUGE impact on his life, more so than any other that I've read about. Just read the book. It's wonderful.
Contains some interesting facts, and lovely quotes, but drags on in some places, and repeats itself often. Good focus on the work, very little about Fred Rogers' personal life.
Love Mr. Rogers and his story. This book...not as much. It was VERY repetitive and at times seemed to be erratic with details. The back and forth between time periods was annoying and sometimes hard to keep up with. But reading about Mr. Rogers’ life still bought a warmth to my heart and tear to my eye that I did know could be possible. Also, I listened to the audiobook so having Levar Burton read the story to me was even more special since I was a huge Reading Rainbow fan as a child. Overall, it was a good (not great) book but I definitely recommend it for the content, not the structure. ❤️
I enjoyed the facts and anecdotes. It was long, but I'm not sure I'd leave anything out though. I read it slowly and savored it.
The story of the man is lovely.... but the writing left something to be desired. Not only was much of it dry and long winded, but it had a discontinuity as well: Sometimes paragraphs would follow paragraphs in a way that felt blocky and disconnected, with no flow between them.... or we'd get a small paragraph about something personal and charming, and then the book would just move on to something else. I wanted to hear about Fred Rogers enough that I stuck with it, and there were enough interesting bits to keep me hooked, but I feel like the book could've used a warmer approach and a better editor.
Biography about the life of Mr Rogers - provided an honest, opens & heartfelt perspective of the life of everyone’s favorite neighbor. I have a greater appreciation for him, his commitment to children, and their emotional development. Only negative comment was that there seemed to be redundancy between the chapters.
I love biographies but the writing style made it a struggle to get through. I felt like every tiny detail was overkill. So much could have been summarized.
