Story gripped me from the start
Yes the romance is slow burn and normally that would drive me nuts. But the writing is so good that it felt right and not tedious. I’m so excited to read the rest of the series

Spellbinding new series
I have read this author's 'Andari Chronicles' and enjoyed them very much, so I was certain I would like this new 'Legends of Abreia' series, as well. I do.
Her writing style is very serious and dark compared to similar genre authors (Camille Peters, K.M. Shea, Tarya Grace). She adds humor to just the right places, to make the story feel more real as you read.
The main characters, Leisa and the Raven, are both being used by kings, though in much different ways.
Leisa is sent by the king pf Farhall to determine the suitability of an alliance with one of the Five Thrones (kingdoms). She uses her magic to masquerade as her princess, Evaraine, to aid in her spying. There are quite a few moments where Leisa barely keeps her image as Evaraine intact, nearly blowing her cover.
The Raven is a prisoner to the magic that binds him, to the king of Garimore, as a deadly weapon against the king's enemies. He is full of rage at his inability to fight back against his captor. His unfeeling demeaner is cracked when he is forced to watch over Leisa, and sees the person she truly is. Even though he knows he will be ordered to kill her eventually, he can't stop himself from caring what happens to her.
There is treachery, there is deceit, there are (many) moments you want to strangle the king of Garimore. This book pulls you in and doesn't let go, even after you read the last page. It does end on a cliffhanger, but not a frustrating one. That chapter of the story is over. What happens next is in the second book. Which I will begin reading immediately

Really enjoyed this, Leisa was a compelling character and the mystery around the Raven amidst all the political manoeuvring she had to navigate made for an engaging plot. I'm curious where the story will go next so I'll be reading book two soon.
I had mixed opinions about this.
At one point I felt that the book had a really weird pacing which neither seemed too fast nor too slow but not in a good way but then there were other things by the end which made me want to finish the book as soon as possible because it intrigued me so much. Nonetheless, it was a good book and I'm excited to read the next!

Is this a new favourite?
I flew through this book and when I say I literally lapped this book up, I was obsessed.
To be honest, I started this book for the plot but I stayed for the characters. How on earth this author has so talentedly written such intensity and sparks between two characters is beyond me. I honestly commend her for this.
Raven was the silent hero everyone needs. Ruthless and jaded but also so completely human (even though he's not). He was one of those characters who spoke a thousand words without saying none at all.
Lesia was strong, relatable and really had a good head on her shoulders. I liked how this book explored her vulnerability and we got a better insight into who she is and where her morals stand.
I hated the King's son - can't even remember his name because he's so irrelevant. I did want more from the real princess but I think we'll probably get that in book two from the direction this book ended.
I'd honestly recommend as I couldn't out this book down.

2 STARS
While the premise was really interesting and unique (the whole 'being trapped in an enchanted armor, stripped of your free will and compelled to become a puppet assassin for an evil king' thing) the story failed to keep my interest. I'm not sure if it was the writing or the pacing, but something just didn't work for me.
The story was dragging way too much in some parts with the unnecessarily long chapters. In the end, I skimmed over that last 40%. I'd lost interest by that point and wanted to get it done quickly.
Oh well...Onwards with my next read!

I read this a while back and really loved it and was re-reading it before I get the rest of series. Sadly, the Scribd version of the audiobook is so mixed up that I could not follow the story anymore. So, I am going onto the next book and going to hope that the audiobook is in order.
