an extremely sweet prequel to solo: a star wars story; i love to know more and more about qi'ra and i adore han solo
The YA entries to the expanded universe seem to consistently be the strongest.

THOROUGHLY enjoyed my first literary jaunt into a galaxy far, far away. Though the stakes were low (Han was secured by plot armour), Carson painted a realistic, and most importantly, canon-fitting insight into Han's early motivations. I will definitely be reading more Star Wars books.

A good entry into the new EU. Some good chemistry and capering.

A prequel to the Solo movie (which is also a prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy, which is a sequel to the prequels—in case that makes your head spin enough), this book tells the story of how Han and Qi'ra become friends and their rise through Lady Proxima's criminal network. Unlike some other Star Wars books I've read, this one is focused and fast-paced, giving enough of the characterization that we need to see these as the characters we know and love, but also see them grow, while also keeping the plot moving. It was a fun read.
2.5 stars means I liked it a lot more than the movie??
Preliminary thoughts:
- I really like that Carson was able to be a little more subtle about the character traits she was obviously asked to portray— like Qi’ra’s attraction to wealth— and this was often a really good example of show-not-tell.
- The plot was basic and didn’t have a lot of interesting variations on the “run away from things” storyline, but it was done pretty well all things considered. Tbh though I’ve already forgotten half of what happened and I just finished it.
- Loving that this story wasn’t bogged down by a super poorly timed romance, and instead focused on the importance of trust and friendship
- The audiobook has fun sound effects so A+ to that

This book started so well. The narrative was gripping, and I found myself trying to work out what would happen but couldn't. It was great to get a story of Han set before the 'Solo' film. I liked getting to know Qi'ra more, and these books really focused on her. Her character development and explanation really fitted her role in the Solo film. In the film, I didn't really connect with Qi'ra, but this story made me care about her. I feel like I learnt a lot more about Rodians and found myself getting super attached to Tsuulo. Altogether, I really enjoyed the book. Unlike other YA fiction, this book didn't centre on romance but rather a friendship and what it meant for the group to work together.
