I liked the premise and the first 20% or so. Once we got down in the deep I didn’t feel the tension and I became disconnected from the setting, the characters, and the stakes.

Okay, I’m conflicted here. Am I the problem? Is it me? Because everyone hyped this book to filth, and yet, I’m over here rating it like a hater. Am I missing something?

Reading The Deep felt like watching a confusing show or movie where you love the plot. You like the first bit, then halfway through it takes a nosedive and gets confusing but you like what you're seeing so you keep going.

I’ll say this: the moments outside of the Trieste? Great stuff. Luke’s wife and son? Awesome. The drama with his mom? Even that stupid toy trunk? Obsessed. I would’ve definitely rated it higher if it was definitely more grounded and realistic while still solely focusing on the Gets disease.

People keep calling The Deep and The Troop Nick Cutter’s magnum opuses, But honestly? The Troop devoured this book. It didn’t just blow it out of the water; it sent it straight to the Mariana Trench.

3.5 I think? This was creepy and I had fun because the ocean is SCARY but there were almost too many themes and horror motifs being touched so i feel a little unsatisfied? And I was stressed about the dog!! I think I would have loved this book w some significant edits. Shout out to Hawkeye Barbershop tho

I saw a lot of reviews saying they hated the ending. I actually liked the ending but the middle felt very disjointed to me. I felt like the end kind of pulled it all together.

He certainly did a great job of creating a creepy atmosphere. The claustrophobia,  the body horror, all sent shivers down my spine and had me panicking. So there was that.

Overall a solid 3. Would recommend but it wasn't life changing or anything.

I picked this up after being so impressed with 'The Troop'.

Nick Cutter's idea was wonderful, though, the execution felt like it consistently got worse as the book went on.

I had no idea what to expect from this book, was it purely psychological, was there truth to the horrors described, it went to places I didn't expect - it's very well written and it got it's hooks into me early, Nick Cutter's writing is like a sticky inviting sap, lulling you into a false sense of security, and by the time you realise it's going to a dark, horrific, claustrophobic place, you're way too deep to stop. I did not expect the ending to go the way it did, my only complaint was the last 100 pages could easily have been condensed down, but tbh it kind of fit the torturous nature of the story. This book made me extremely uncomfortable, very claustrophobic, and had me gasp, laugh, and cry. If you're into horror, an automatic recommend, but be warned it's not a pretty journey
