I’m not gonna lie this was one was painfully slow for me. I thought about DNF a few times but I pushed through. I’m glad I did because it did pick up momentum around 80% in but not enough to salvage the overall pace being dreadfully slow.

The twists were good but as a thriller addict, I found them to be predictable.

If you enjoy a slow burn and don’t read thrillers very often, you will probably enjoy this one. ❤️

Thank you NetGalley and TOR Publishing Group for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This psychological thriller kept me guessing all the way to the end! I binged it! Once I started I couldn’t put it down. This is my second book by this author that I have read. I am looking forward to going through her back list!

Towards the end of the book the MC, Alyssa, refers to herself as 'a complete, hopeless, idiot.' So accurate, if you enjoy reading books about characters that make the most ridiculous decisions then pick this one up.
Apart from that, the friendships that were made through the book happened so quickly I thought the book had covered a few weeks, but no, at one point it was mentioned that it had only been five days. Five days and this person is living with you and knows all your secrets... I couldn't buy into it.
The story itself jumps around at times, to the point that more than once I flipped back a few pages thinking I had skipped some by accident.
The ending felt thrown together, with information and events provided to wrap it all up that had never been mentioned previously.

Thank you Forge Books for the complimentary copy and Macmillan Audio for the complimentary audiobook.

200+ pages of repetitive conversations and nothing interesting happening, followed by 100 pages of rapid and absurd plot resolution. Not satisfying. Easy read, at least.

Hank Phillippi Ryan at her best. An expertly crafted thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers turning pages. I actually listened on Audible, and the narrator was fantastic. This was one mystery I didn't predict. Did not see THAT coming!

Alyssa Macallan spent her night at a local bar after her wealthy husband decides to leave her. She meets a woman named Bree Lorrance there, and they hit it off immediately. Alyssa felt an instant bond and agreed to let Bree stay at her home after hearing about her own life problems. After moving in, some strange things keep happening, such as the FBI showing up, someone breaking into Alyssa’s house, and Bree offers to help her get rid of her husband. Alyssa does not know who can be trusted anymore.

The House Guest was my first novel by Hank Phillips Ryan. I was excited to start this audiobook because I had heard good things about her books and being a local writer was a plus! The book was overall a decent story. Although the twists were predictable, and I was right about some things, the build-up was still nicely done, and I still enjoyed the ride. The ending was still a surprise. Also, the narrator, Stephanie Willing, made the audiobook enjoyable to listen to. I did round up solely on the narration.

Thank you to NetGallery and to McMillan audio for giving me a copy of the audiobook.

Alyssa and Bree have just met and Alyssa is already offering her a place to stay. Who in their right mind would invite a stranger to live with them? Crazy birds that's who.

Meh, I wasn't overly thrilled with this one. I can't think of one character I liked. It was on the slow side for quite a while, but then eventually picked up a bit. Repetitiveness galore ~ I felt like I was hearing 'soon to be ex-husband' or 'we're separated' a bazillion too many times. I might have zoned out for a few minutes because I am not even sure if the loose end of Tammy (I think that's the housekeepers name) was tied up. I'll round up to 3 since I didn't see a twist coming. This is my first experience with this author and while I wasn't thrilled I will read another one to see if she's for me.

Narration notes:
While the narration was done well, I think I might have liked it better if I read it, but I'll never know because I'm not a re-reader.

Nothing to do with anything, but I like how the lipstick matches the author's name on the cover.
