Sooooo I'm obsessed with this book now. Liza and Dorsey's tension was *delicious* and I was hooked after their second encounter. Nikki Payne had me laughing, grasping imaginary pearls, and fantasizing the entire time.

It cracks me up that I almost forgot this was a Pride and Prejudice retelling because of how racy it got. Nikki made the connections clear with clever name changes but the plot was super elaborate and relatable to present day. I love how she handled themes like grief, adoption, belonging, and complicated family dynamics on top of those already present in the original tale like class.

I can't wait to read Sex, Lies and Sensibility and anything else Nikki Payne writes!

Nikki Payne GETS Jane Austen. There's a real deep level of respect and understanding of the relationship dynamics in P&P that are expertly woven into this re-telling. It's expertly crafted, and I'm super excited to see what she does with other Austen adaptations. Despite all this, I found a lot of the ways in which the Bennet sisters interacted with their online communities to be deeply cringey and out of touch (Liza uses a selfie stick for routine Instagram lives in what I'm assuming is not 2012?). I unfortunately could not look past it and it did effect how much I was able to connect to the characters.

Taylor Swift songs: “Dancing with our hands tied”

Age rating: 17+ (2 steamy scenes, 1/5🌶️)

This book was such a fresh and modern take on the classic, “Pride and Prejudice”! I think it’s my favorite modern book adaptation. It did a great job of discussing the disparity between Liza and Dorsy, especially regarding race and class/economic levels. I love how he is putting in the work on his own to become more educated about the issues that matter to her (ex. Housing crisis and wealth disparity) by reading up on it and even auditing a class!! He really is putting in the effort, and not relying on/expecting her to educate him. We love to see it. There were also so many little moments where you can see Dorsy really listens to her and puts those feelings into action, even in the little ways.

Also, the whole cast of characters were so vibrant, distinctive, and entertaining!

This book is written in third person, with dual POV. I like that we get dual pov so we see how Darcy/Dorsy is feeling and thinking throughout the story, which we don’t get from the original.

Overall, this is such an amazing read, and I cannot wait to read Payne’s next book which is a retelling of “Sense and Sensibility”!

This is an entire 5 stars. WOW.

I met Nikki Payne for a hot second at Steamy Lit Con 2023 and she said she wrote this book (paraphrasing) because she liked Pride and prejudice but wanted it to be sexier! Nikki herself is a vivavious, funny, sparkling personality and the book is just the same as her.

If you have watched the 2005 Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly greater than 20 times like myself, you will ADORE this book. It takes the best scenes of that movie and skillfully weaves it into the modern romance: a young woman determined to change the world but not realizing she may not know how to do that, and a young man who is hung up on preserving his parents’ legacy, not realizing he is going about it all wrong. They collide and BOOM SPARKS. I gobbled it up. I gasped, I texted friends to gush about it, I had kicky feet, and I let loose enough horrifying giggles to make even Janae Bennett be embarrassed (read the book you’ll see).

This is a romance must read in the making. Can’t wait for Nikki Payne’s next book!!

This was just an absolute delight to read! It was great to bring on vacation, and I really had fun with the way that Payne adapted Pride and Prejudice to the present day. Reading it as a reading swap book also enhanced the experience because I always find it fun to see other people's thoughts while they are reading.

Not only were the main characters developed well, but there were also side characters that were a delight and enhanced the reading experience. I definitely think I would read something by Nikki Payne again!

Pride and Protest is a modern take on Pride and Prejudice and to be honest, I have never read or seen Pride and Prejudice, so I have nothing to compare it to. However, Pride and Protest was everything and more! The storyline was great, and the characters were even better. I loved how diverse this book is with a Black female lead and Filipino male lead with Latina and Korean secondary characters.

I will admit, I personally thought this book did start pretty rocky with Dorsey making comments on Liza's hair and Liza mistaking Dorsey as Latino and not Filipino, but the character development made up for it in the end.

I also do wish that there was a little more protest in this book, Liza always seemed to be a day late and a dollar short when it came to protesting for important causes but I think that was supposed to attribute to her almost clumsy-like personality.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Nikki Payne’s books in the future!
