This book was EVERYTHING! I appreciate how she lovingly got me together and snatched my braids to the scalp helping me to rethink and revise my behaviors and language as a body positive nonfatphobic person. She also shared ideas that I haven’t considered in that way because of her personal experience. I would argue this should enter the Black Feminism cannon and I’m so excited to see where she and other trap feminists (a phrase I think she has coined) go next. I’d also like to reread Brittany Cooper to determine the relationship between crunk feminism and trap feminism. I think this is a good book for students as young as high school and I do believe it’s must read college material especially in any gender and/or race/“diversity” based course. She’s smart, funny, honest, warm and inviting as the audiobook narrator and I recommend this book to all Black women, all Black feminist, all persons interested in body positivity, lovers of trap music (some pretty interesting/awesome music analysis was thrown in that was new to me cause as an older woman a lot of the songs and artists were h familiar to me beyond their names except Glorilla, City Girls, Trina, Foxy, Gucci Mane, Cardi B and Megan the Stallion for the most part). I absolutely loved this book. This book was a love letter to women, Black women, fat women, fat Black women, the hood, gettin’ money, love and lust, trap music and all of that combined. I absolutely loved how Sesali Bowen used her education in Women and Gender Studies to tie it all together. “When Rico Nasty thanks God that she didn’t have to smack a bitch today, she’s creatively channeling what Audre Lorde called ‘uses of anger.’” I felt that in my SOUL, baby!!! I listened to this on audiobook (read by the author), and I’m so glad that I did. I feel like this might just be a must read for Women and Gender Studies majors, especially Black women.

September 24 reread—-Ravenclaw Womanist Cyborg Trap Feminist! This is my tagline now lol. This is a wonderful, beautiful book that puts black women that are on the margins back in the center. The author talks about fatphobia,misogynoir in music and real life, homophobia and sexual issues that really makes you think about your privileges and priorities! I am glad that I read this book because it really breaks down black feminism in a way that is accessible and also more impactful for me and my peers. I will be applying a lot of what I read in my own life (which is the whole book lol). She also centers female hip-hop which I love!!!! Highly, Highly recommended. I would also pair this with Eloquent Rage by Dr. Brittney Cooper and Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone by Minna Salami for a trifecta of great Black Feminist Books to read. All five stars and my favorite!!!!

Really enjoyed! I was left with a better understanding of trap music and it’s feminist undertones. As a black woman with a certain level of privilege, I was given valuable insight and awareness of black women who don’t have the privileges I have. This book left me undoubtedly knowing that there is strength and beauty in the black woman experience - no matter what side of the trap/track you live on.
