A different take on a "coming of age" story...and a rather sad mid-life crisis. It was rather difficult to like the characters, especially as they developed. This novel points out how difficult it is to break out of life's patterns.

i got this book from granny pats little library in howth. thanks nan

This is a book about people who drink milk. If you drink milk you might like it. I however do not.

Лучшая книга за последнее время. История о браке, о судьбе, о жизни и о случайностях, из которых она состоит.

This was really up and down for me. I loved it at first. I adored Macon and the Learys. I was rooting for Macon and Sarah to work it out. The writing impressive, flowing from humor to tragedy and creating realistic characters who could have easily been turned to charictures in a lesser writer's hands. But Muriel. Oh Muriel is awful. She is joining my list of characters I would most like to punch in the face. She's a horrible person and Macon is far far too good for her. And I think you're supposed to like her? So that left me really confused about how I feel about the book. It was also pretty sexist. The assumptions about gender roles felt like this was written in 1955 instead of 1985. There was also an awful comment about people who don't have children. However it was interesting to read a book that didn't go the way I wanted. Happy endings aren't a given.
I did find it funny that Macon writes travel books for business travelers and I bought this while on a business trip to NYC. I did not follow his advice though and did quite a lot of sightseeing - and took my spouse.

Very well written; a little bit of a slow start but ends up being more interesting than I anticipated.

Possibly one of the most boring books I’ve read in a long time.

it was a quick read (Read it in one day). I thought Muriel was very annoying. She was hard to read.

And the ending BIG TIME let me down.

This book was really well written. Anne Tyler is skilled at creating distinct settings and atmospheres. I admire her writing, although she could have really worked at her pace. The plot moved at a frustratingly slow speed, and most of the character development seemed to take place at the end of book, when I expected it in the middle.
Her characters were well written too. Macon's flaws were clearly portrayed as the novel progressed. It wasn't that he was unfeeling, but rather reserved. Not to mention confused and fearful. I liked Muriel too, although there were moments when I questioned her self-respect.
Overall, it was a good read. I especially liked the quote towards the end when Macon says that the greatest adventure is that of time.

I enjoyed the book a lot and has been wondering all throughout reading the book cause the author has written the whole book mostly from a male's prospective. Family, marriage and relationship have always been the themes of Anne Tyler's books. The change of the ending is a little bit too quick.
