"The Scorpion's Tail" is the second installment in the Nora Kelly series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The story follows FBI agent Corrie Swanson as she investigates a new case involving a mummified body discovered in a ghost town in New Mexico. As she delves deeper into the case, she realizes she needs the help of archeologist Nora Kelly. Together they uncover a shocking truth (but I'd spoil things if I named it).

The story is engaging and fast-paced, with well-drawn characters and an intriguing mystery. You can read the book on its own, but readers familiar with the Nora Kelly and Pendergast series will enjoy the return of familiar characters and appreciate nuances.

The mystery lept me guessing, and that's a good thing. However, it also felt a bit convoluted in places. Preston & Child are pros, though, and know how to pace the story and build suspense. That's exactly why I like their books. A light, engaging and suspenseful pastime with likable characters.

Overall, "The Scorpion's Tail" is a solid thriller that delivers what it promises: suspense, action and intrigue. Fans of Preston and Child's earlier works, as well as readers who enjoy a good mystery, will get their money's worth here.

It took some time to get to something that represented the Scorpion's Tail. I was not sure why the book was given that name. There was a lot of active situations where you were worried about some of the main characters might get hurt or die.
Essentially, the book starts with a rookie FBI person having caused a young girl got shot during an hostage situation. She get's put on a job that is not really a case where she investigates if the body found in a ghost town was a natural death or murder.
There is a lot of people searching in an area of New Mexico for artifacts and that is how the body was found by a scavenger. There are two stories going on within the base story and each involves artifact hunters.
The author touches on sexism in certain fields and how life is just not fair.
I like the way the author keeps you wondering what are people really looking for and where is it?
It is a good book. I hope I did not tell too much.

I've been eagerly anticipating this second installment of Nora Kelly since I've read ARC reviews months ago. However, I was deeply disappointed. The bad guys are caricatures and the hunt for lost gold has been done to death. I had some trouble keeping Nora and Cory apart and the story was so mind numbingly boring that I almost gave up, even though I had it on audio. I think Douglas Preston from here on will be shelved with "authors I no longer read".
