I was not really in the mental space to read something like this to be honest. After reading a number of novels, getting back to non-fiction and spiritual stuff was challenging and awkward. I found myself struggling with these concepts initially. I was reading very slowly having to re-read passages all the time. Once I got back into this mode though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Potent and powerful book. Really puts religion and myth into perspective and gave me a better understanding of where I stand in regard to my spiritual journey. I think that this could be beneficial to anyone looking to challenge their religion or understanding of myths. Parts of it were not very engaging or relevant to me but overall I loved it.

Several parts of this book blew my mind, and I'm sure I'll pick it up in five years and different parts will blow my mind all over again. I'm also looking forward to watching the dvd of the original conversation that led to the book. I can only envy those who had the honor of learning from the man in person during his long career as a professor.

An incredible book. I wish I had read it earlier. So much insight and wisdom. A must have for every library.

"Sit in a room and read--and read and read. And read the right books by the right people. Your mind is brought onto that level, and you have a nice, mild, slow-burning rapture all the time" - Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells, are within you.” - Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

What I expected: a potentially dry but probably interesting instruction on the historical and modern role of myth on societies around the world.

What I got: an aging hippie trying to reconcile his dearly-held spiritual and social beliefs (especially of the "everything foreign is better" ilk) with his almost biological urge to rail against "kids these days". Also, some other guy kissing his arse.

Very disappointing.

Horrible

100% worth listening to the audio on this interview. It was wonderful to hear Joseph Campbell get so excited, or hear how he explains metaphors.

Magistral!
