i haven’t read a book in a while that had me giggling and kicking my feet. i really enjoyed this rom-com story of rooney and jack because it felt genuine with their jokes and how their story begins.
rooney has more of an open mind and believes everything happens due to fate, especially with her art work and romance life. jack is the complete opposite who likes evidence/proof and sticking within the rules. the night that they meet had me smiling the entire time of how cute it was. i enjoyed reading about their relationship and how they were both teaching each other traits about one another
fate brought them closer together from the print shop, lantern festival, hanging out til sunrise, working together in the west coast. they were truly perfect for each other!
I listened to the audiobook version of this book during an emergency roadtrip I took with my MIL. We spent 4 days together attached at the hip, and we listened to the audiobook every time we were in the car, pausing to exchange thoughts, jokes, or reminders. We’ve had a rough few days and this book gave us a reason to laugh and escape from our shared reality.
At one point, she asked me, “Doesn’t Jack remind you of your husband? Rooney makes me think of you. He’s the more introverted one, and you’re the more extroverted, bubbly personality. You push him out of his comfort zone.” And I told her, “Yes, actually. I can totally see it.”
The author seamlessly weaves in bits and pieces of Chinese culture into the fabric of the story, I like to think using red string. The writing is deeply illustrative and made me feel like I was an active passenger with my hands up on the ride, sitting right behind Jack and Rooney. There’s romance, but there’s something more too. Something that feels bigger.
I don’t know if I’d made a conscious choice to download the audiobook, or if it was fate. But maybe it was both.

I really loved Lauren’s first book, Lunar Love, and was glad that this book was just as enjoyable. I appreciated the cameo from the couple in the first book as well.
I enjoyed the mixture of art and science references in this book as well as the sweet chemistry between the two main characters. I appreciated that the chapters alternated between the female and male main characters.
At times, I got frustrated with the female main character second guessing herself. And the singular focus on his career for the male main character got tiring. But the side characters added depth to the story as well as a strong sense of place with NYC and Los Angeles.
Good, solid first read of the #backlistbooks25 challenge. I am looking for to her next book that comes out later this month.
