More than a 4 for sure, but it was just a little too long for me. I don't think more should have been edited from it though, I'd vote for two books. I listened to it, which pretty much kills your ability to dally over gripping parts and breeze over filler. It was quite a gripping tale, deliciously Gothic with a full cast performance that to me is the epitome of the delivery of a Gothic tale. Had this been a radio program back in the day, people would have been glued to their sets. Does anyone know if it is being adapted for film? It was written so descriptively and then performed so well that you could imagine it all quite clearly in your head. It would have been inappropriate to do it any other way, but I still appreciated that it was the classic romanticized vampire story, with all the familiar powers and weaknesses, and not some of the crazy stuff that we have seen over the years now. I don't actually recall reading the original, but I've downloaded it now...

I loved everything about this book and read it in one journey. The references where interwoven amd very rewarding to find and it was everything from a horror to a lovestory to a coming of age. An obsession in me has taken hold.
Bram nand matilda and ellens story was amazing to see unravel and Thornley and Emily's was heartbreaking and horrific. This book gave me the character depth and work that surpasses the dracula story I'm my opinion (although I do love it dearly).

Just didn't grab me. Felt like there wasn't enough context and set up at the beginning to make me really invested in the struggles of little Bram, or maybe it was just the style of the prose, but I got a quarter of the way in and it was just feeling like a slog.
Fantastic new Dracula tale. The prose is reminiscent of Stoker's writing style, but much more modern. It definitely made me squirm though, there's lots of insects and bugs in this book.
Started so good, then slogged a little, but it was so worth the journey In the end. I loved it. A well crafted vampire tale worthy of the Stoker legend.

Barker już „Czwartą Małpą” udowodnił, że żadnym grafomanem nie jest i do mrocznych i niebanalnych historii ma nieprzeciętne pióro. A „Draculem” napisanym wraz z Dacrem Stokerem tylko potwierdził swój pioruński talent. Panom udało się napisać pełnokrwistą gotycką powieść grozy. Już od pierwszych stron miałam przeczucie, że oto trafiła mi się książka wyjątkowa, która zdecydowanie wybija się ponad poziom większości dzisiejszych horrorów.
Historia przedstawiona w „Draculu” jest iście gotycka - pełna tajemnic, starych zamczysk, przerażających legend, podań i folkloru. Gdyby nie współczesny język byłabym pewna, że obcuję z powieścią napisaną kilkaset lat temu. I tak jak już sama fabuła jest znakomita - nie dość, że szalenie interesująca to i niesztampowa i nieprzewidywalna (w żadnym momencie książki nie myślcie, że wiecie jak dalej potoczy się historia oraz jakie są motywacje i cele bohaterów. Zapewniam - autorzy niejeden raz Was zaskoczą.). Jednak to klimatem „Dracul” stoi - ciężkim i gęstym tak, że można by go nożem kroić, przepełnionym grozą, a jednocześnie zawierającym nutkę romantyzmu. Jak na najlepszy horror przystało - powieść potrafi autentycznie wystraszyć! W „Draculu” aż roi się od niepokojących, sugestywnych szczegółowych opisów wywołujących gęsia skórkę i ciarki na plecach.
Ach, jak chciałabym aby Barker zostawił thrillery i całkowicie przerzucił się na horrory! „Dracul” jest doskonały! Pasjonujący i przerażający, dopracowany w każdym calu. Absolutny top przeczytanych przeze mnie w tym roku powieści grozy!

This was a fast-paced, action packed novel which was very entertaining to read.
It doesn't get more stars because it was very predictable, from the get go you know exactly what's going to happen without an ounce of mystery and the whole Vampire thing could have been a little more creepy or scary.
Overall still a very enjoyable read and I loved how Matilda's character was fully involved in the story, she was great.

I’ll admit the beginning seemed to drag on, and I was ready for action! However, once I got into it, it was very gripping and kept me reading right through even the Author’s Note. As a bit of a classics junkie, I’ve wanted to read this “prequel” since it came out and was happy to have access during “spooky” season. The authors did a great job sticking to the format of letters, journals, notes, and diaries, which always adds to the suspense with differing perspectives, and I loved the twists of including Bram as a character and following his upbringing and family life. Scary and yet oddly touching . I don’t give 5 stars lightly, so if you’re a Dracula fan, then it’s a must!
