a true classic in its enduring (unfortunate) relevancy. i gathered much more from this read than i had in middle school and while, yes, it lacks some nuance, i found the overt actions in the allegory to be even more impactful, alarming, and applicable to modern day.

This book was just not what I remembered from English lit class. While in a lot of ways it still seems quite relevant, particularly in light of this year's election shenanigans, it also seems dated and tailored specifically to warn about the dangers of Communism under Stalin. I'd also forgotten just how shallow and obvious a story it was. One of the things I like best about books is the ability to make you sympathize with the characters, but I didn't find myself interested or involved in any of the character's actions here. For a book that's often held up as a classic example of political satire and lampooning, it felt much more like a line-by-line allegory for Stalinist Russia.

Overall just a disappointing experience for me, and one that I probably won't be revisiting.

It is weird reading 1984 first and then coming back to Animal Farm to read for the first time. Many of the same concepts and ideas pop up in slightly altered, simpler terms. I don't have much to say other than that I enjoyed how quick a read it was and almost how over the top it was with its point. I don't think it was a true critique of only communism, but more of a cycle of humanity and all government regimes.

Very interesting ideas that I've now realised have been used in multiple cultural references since it's release.
