I'm not sure I've ever skimmed through a book so much. Legitimately, the only reason I kept reading was because I'd already recorded my page number on Goodreads and thus saw it as a commitment. The first third of the book was practically just high school drama, complete with cliche insta-love and hints of a love triangle. And of course, the resident stereotypical dark, bad boy who's meant to be attractive but who should probably be avoided at all costs if he were actually real. Seriously, ugh. Cole was controlling and even threatened to spank Ali--albeit jokingly. Still, really? As if the book weren't bad enough already, throw in the fact that there was a gross "turning people gay" joke. And slut-shaming. And ridiculous, laughable description, like "Asian with dark hair and eyes." Once the zombie stuff actually made an appearance, the exposition was just dumped via, of all things, a Q and A session. I think what bothered me the most was that the tone of the book never changed--the narration, school, and "action" scenes all sort of just melded together in this litany of boredom.
This has been one of my favorite books (series) for a long time and it really got me into fantasy romance. I love the world building along with the romance.
DNF at 59%.
This book is everything that is wrong in YA fiction today.

I need the next book like I need air! I love retellings and I love Alice in Wonderland! This book was everything I wanted and more! So relateable and a tasteful amounts of "WTF?!" moments. Definitely would recommend this to supernatural lovers!
Love, Love, Loved this book. Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets, twilight, meets zombies
Lots of fun, very current and up-to-date with it's setting and language. Loved the love story...offered me that living vicariously thing again, as did Showalter's other series. They offer a nice escape and some interesting ideas. A tad heavy on the faith, however...I get that it was a big part of her life before writing this. But it felt a bit heavy-handed to me.
Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter
I have been staring at the cover of this book for years in Barnes & Nobles and libraries so I placed a hold at my local library, sat down gave it a read and I was not disappointed .
Alice Bell isn't allowed out after dark, no dating ,no catching late night movies with friends and no sleepovers. Its the same for the rest of her family as well .Why? because her father says there are monsters out there that will hurt and kill them all if they go out after dark .No one can see these monsters but him .Alice blows off her fathers drunken rampages and chalks them up to him just being a bad parent with more than a touch of insanity .After a tragic accident that leaves her family dead and her grandparents as her guardians ,Alice starts to see the very monsters her dad kept yelling about . At a new school after summer has ended Alice meets Cole and his very dangerous group of friends always battered and bruised up and everyone tells her that they are bad news and to stay away . Never one to stay out of trouble Alice is drawn to them and soon she is learning about the monsters that she thought weren't real ,how to avenge them her family and falling in love. Alice finds herself facing the choice of life in a world where she can make believe monsters don't exist and stay safe or believe they exist fight to survive and possibly lose the only family and friends she has left .
I never was a fan of zombies but I have to say this author really knew how to put a new spin on the zombie aspect . I know now why I liked this book so much as well I have read this author before and her writing style is smooth and even, an easy read in every sense of the word ,no fluff . I hate fluff unless its that marshmallow stuff you eat out of the jar . I also liked this book because I am obsessed with any and all Alice in Wonderland themed story . This of course was not a retelling by any means but the bits and pieces thrown in here and there the different chapter names that were reminiscent of some of the words or ideas from Alice in Wonderland I was very pleased . I would recommend this book if your looking for a book that will make you cringe ,cry ,laugh out loud at the one liners that come out of some of the characters mouths ,a bit of gore lots of action and a sprinkle of romance. This book is for you!I cant stress enough how happy I was that the characters in these books were not always trying to get into each others pants. Other authors please take the hint you CAN write a YA themed book with romance and two teens not trying to get into each others hip huggers .Anyway , great read go check it out !

I have read many of Gene Showalter’s adult novels and was anxious to see what she would deliver in the young-adult genre. Alice in Zombieland was a deliciously humorous romp into the paranormal world and I quickly found myself enthralled. Her unique twists on Zombies, endearing characters and action packed tale had me screaming for more. “Off With Their Heads!” There is a white rabbit but fans of the childhood fable Alice in Wonderland who are looking for a retelling, will find themselves disappointed. This unique tale is sure to delight paranormal and zombie fans.
The tale begins with a horrific tragedy and the realization for protagonist Alice Bell, that her father’s whispered fears of monsters in the night are indeed very real. As Alice embarks on her new life, home and school she must decide whether to fight or hide. Moving through the motions of living, she is forced back into reality by her snarky friend Kat and bad-boy Cole. Visions, visits from ghosts and monsters quickly have Alice taking sides and in a fight to survive. This well paced tale was filled with danger, romance, hilarious moments and zombies.
The characters in Alice in Zombieland were fun and likeable. Ali Bell’s world has been totally rocked and I initially felt sorry for her, but I came to admire this head-strong, protective, loyal, zombie kicking chick. Cole Holland is a bad-boy and head of a group of teens who are notoriously late, getting expelled and have girls swooning for them. While I would not call the relationship between them insta-love, there were some unusual supernatural elements that caused their initial attraction to each other. We quickly learn there is a lot more to Cole then his persona. Kat becomes Ali’s bestie and quite frankly I adored this snarky, outspoken wisp of a girl. If you ever need someone to be in your corner, Kat would be perfect. I found the secondary characters to be entertaining and hope to learn more about them.
Showalter offered up her own unique twist on zombies and I found it interesting. The zombies are not the kind we typically see, but exist in the spirit world. They cannot be seen by everyone, you cannot touch them and yet they can kill you…Eep! I really enjoyed this aspect of the tale, and while the storyline itself is not wholly original, Showalter’s twist on battling these zombies was. I loved how they fought the zombies, the rules and the abilities that developed. She introduced Watchers and I am hoping we learn more about them. Two teams battling these zombies, we learn an epic battle is coming and that both sides have different motives. This created plenty of tension and cool battle scenes. We learned about the two sides as Ali did, causing you to question who to trust. The romance was volatile, sweet and moved at a nice pace. While this is YA, there are plenty of hot steaming scenes that push this genre to the limit. The characters were not as fleshed out as I would have liked and at times the tale felt a little cliché but I walked away wanting more. I am anxious to see how the tale develops.
If you are looking for an entertaining and unique zombie fix with a hot little romance on the side, you will love Alice in Zombieland. I was highly entertained and zipped through the novel. I plan to continue this series with Through the Zombie Glass book two in the White Rabbit Chronicles series scheduled to be released in 2013.
