I guess some things never change. I’ve read it in 2013 in one sitting just like I did today.
I JUST LOVE IT! WHEN THEY FIRST MEET AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT AWAITS THEM! THIS SERIES IS A MUST READ! AMAZING!! ;)
Good, Lord. This book was a mixture of every single YA trope out there today, and mis-marketing. Is mis-marketing a word? Well, it is now. Anywho, when I read the blurb, I was expecting a book about a girl (obviously named Alice) who goes to a Wonderland filled with zombies. I expected a kickbutt heroine with some truly fantastic fight scenes and the like. What I got, was a flimsy protagonist, the most controlling love interest since- dare I say it- Christian Grey, almost zero parallels to the original Alice story, and a slew of other characters ranging from genuinely sweet, to let-me-rip-their-head-off all with fake names that confuse the bajeebers out of me.
Just because a book has a rabbit and someone named Alice in it, does not mean that it is instantly and Alice in Wonderland retelling. And that is what this book did. I mean, I guess if you really want to STRETCH some of these characters, Emma could be the Cheshire Cat, and the random boys could fill in other character voids. But really, that is an insanely thin stretch.
Besides, the characters were not that strong to begin with. Cole, our love interest, is paper-thin with almost no character development in this book. Yes, the series is a quartet, but I better learn some major news about him in the next book or I'm going to be mad. Cole is also insanely controlling. He pushes Alice around constantly, orders her to do things she really isn't a fan of, and buys her teeny tiny clothing to wear (long story). And Alice lets it happen. At first, I thought I was going to like her. I thought Alice was going to be strong and stand up for herself and become a ninja (well, kind of a ninja) in this book. But no. Instead, her bark is worse than her bite and she is a huge pushover. Especially around people with abs and many differently flavored kisses (don't even ask). Kat and Justin were the only characters that really stood out. Kat was just... Meh. And Justin, I liked. I mean I hated him, but I liked him. It's complicated.
The plot was... Well, it existed. And, as far as plots go, it really wasn't bad. I mean, I did see an overarching plot that I could be interested in, and the spirit zombie aspect was actually captivating. That being said, I hope that the characters change in book two.
Now, I will be reading book two. Why? Because I'm genuinely interested in the zombies. That being said, I will quit the series if these characters don't change much and don't grow up soon.

Alice's father has been crazy her entire life. He sees monsters that aren't there and forbids any member of the family from setting foot out the door after the sun has set. An insane father doesn't make high school life easy and school functions that take place after dark? Forget about attending those. But when Alice's little sister Emma begs her to convince their parents to let her dance in her recital, Alice can't refuse. But she wishes she had. If she had maybe they would still be alive and maybe she wouldn't be seeing the monsters she always considered her father crazy for saying existed. But she did convince them and now she has to learn to survive in a world of monsters without them.
This was not what I was expecting. I was hoping for an Alice in Wonderland retelling with some zombie butt kicking, but instead it had a character named Alice with very stretched allusions to the original novel (a rabbit cloud and Alice in Wonderland-esque chapter titles). I know this author as an adult romance novel writer and the romantic tension scenes definitely sizzle, but the overall premise and writing style just didn't click for me. There's a lot of set up and information dumping in the dialogue as Alice is brought into the world of spirit-zombie butt kicking which kept pulling me out of the story. If you're going to give this one a shot, don't go in expecting an Alice in Wonderland retelling.

Just wasn’t clicking with it - first few chapters were cool though
Ehhhhhh, this book was ok. Lots of teenage angst and too-detailed descriptions of bodies after a car crash. Not my cup of tea.
4 stars!?
I have to rate this to about 4-3.5, still can't decide. So this book if you have not read the synopsis, is about zombies! Yes! What a shocker! Anyways, from the synopsis I was kind of getting an apocalypse vibe, Nope! This was set in modern times, but with spirit zombies. Yeah I know, it's a little different and I liked how she it up. This book kind of reminded me of a modern spin on Something Strange & Deadly (by Susan Dennard?) but there were differences so it felt like they weren't at war with eachother.
This is definitely a YA a novel, if you absolutely hate YA...Stay away! We have a girl who has been sheltered (Alice) family dies in tragic way (oh no!) of course she is the only one to survive with a few wounds. Girl moves in with grandparents, goes to new school, yada yada yada. Meets the hottest guy there! You can probably predict where this is going....there's even that sweet boy at first she goes after that SPOILER: turns out to be evil SPOILER OVER.
Yes this was like EVERY other YA novel, but I still enjoyed it. The author loves her characters just about as much as Veronica Roth loved hers (read between the lines here hehe). It was pretty predictable and a little humorous, I didn't really find any problems with the characters. The zombie hunting was awesome! The novel wasn't at all slow, it paced quite nicely, and I will look forward to reading the sequel.

If we are judging by book cover alone, I was excited. I thought a zombie twist to Alice in Wonderland ? Why wasn't I told about it sooner ?
As I started to read, I saw bits and pieces of the similarities. They introduced Alice as the day dreamer, her head in the clouds. They even make a reference to the white rabbit.
Unfortunately the story loses all of that after the first few pages. You completely lose the adaptation effect and are thrown into a typical "Twilight" special.
For one, no matter how many times I reminded myself of the ages, by description and all, I could only envision Cole as a 22 year old that failed one to many times from his zombie slaying. In fact, the same went for his whole crew.
I rated this three stars for the simple fact that I DID enjoy the spin on how zombies are seen and go about. I am a huge fan of zombies and the typical brains and headshot deaths. It was a refreshing twist for something different.
Everything else was disappointment after disappointment.

Great Debut to an interesting series
What a new and fresh take on zombies! I loved reading this funny, action packed novel. I thought it would be more like the original Alice in Wonderland but the title seems to be a play on words. A great read if you enjoy action, mystery, romance and a little gore!!!
