A fun read ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Honestly, really enjoyed 80% of this and it felt a lot more whole than Iron Flame did, however the ending felt rushed and incomplete. Like someone needed to hand an assignment in on time and only just made the deadline.
Overall, the flow and feel of the story was easier to follow than previous books (still a bit jumpy but I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon) and I really enjoyed seeing how the characters started to adapt to a changing world.
Hoping that the break between books now will leave more time for the author to plot out the course of the story, instead of taking jagged twists that don’t seem to align with the plot. I love a cliffhanger as much as the next girl, I just wish this felt more.. fulfilled and was leading somewhere interesting without undermining all the world building done up to this point.
Will I continue to read the series? Yes. But I’ve come to accept that these books will leave me wishing they were written with more care.

Well now I understand why everyone said this is a confusing as hell book. Because huh!?
I re read FW & IF to prepare in hopes I wouldn’t be confused like everyone else. But nope. This is a batshit insane book, there a map and a short list of characters at the front of book, and yet was useless? They travelled to islands not listed on the map, so what was the damn point. The character list was useless cause the characters you need info on aren’t there!
I’d love a list of gods, cause they’ve been barely mentioned in the previously book but now I’m meant to know them?
And sorry “the traitor” at the end, like okay I know the name but who is he!? I can’t remember cause they’ve not be relevant since FW.
Honestly what a mess of a book. I’m not sure I can continue with this series, a bad second book I can forgive but this was just a cluster fuck. And it’s disappointing because when they plot is there it’s good, but there has clearly been no planning at all! Ugh

I really enjoyed this and did not expect to! The graphic audiobook is phenomenal and I think that’s a huge reason why I enjoyed this as much as I did. I’m glad I continued with the series after seeing some meh reviews. This series is truly a guilty pleasure- there is honestly so much I could pick apart (the 🧀, the weird mix of angsty teen dialogue and medieval times) but I had such a fun time listening to this! I would love if Xaden to go full-on bad guy but I doubt that will happen.
WTF. And not in a good way.
Audio review. and there will be spoilers.
What was the point? Nothing happens. Nothing is resolved. I don't know any of these characters. Or places. Is there a map in the actual book? Cause I don't know where any of the places are. I rarely know where they are at any given time. I can't remember everyone's signet. Especially now that Everyone has 2. I don't even recall who is on the quest.
Characters are missing or not much screen time and others are thrown in for no reason. Where is Jesinia? rhiannon gets little screen time and really doesn't do much. Try to make a big deal of getting Sawyer back on his dragon....and then...crickets. Who TF is Quinn? And why do I care? For a minute I thought it was Imogen's gf but they are besties. So ok. Bye. Dain was getting interesting in IF. Sloan did one thing. Mira isn't satifactorily written IMO. Brennan does nothing but mend. HAlden was randomly thrown in for the jealousy aspect. Boring. I want more of Aaric. But he only shows up with the golden ticket when everything is dire.
As a nerd and bibliophile, I appreciated the scribe to rider transformation. In FW Violet is researching and quoting books from memory. What happened to that girl? Supposedly she is researching in this book. But all we see is her asking people if they know how to.... and they don't.
Random plot holes and devices are thrown in for no reason. Why does Violet not go to Aaric and ask questions? His signet was blatantly obvious. And smart girl doesn't pick up on it? And she let the dreamwalking thing go on and on. Seriously. Tairn poopoos her comment about it- last book? It all blurs together now. And then Andarna and he both know about her second signet but never bothered to tell her or discuss how it might be used?
WTF happened to Xaden. He was an interesting character. And now he is Tarzan. Me love Violet. No touch Violet. She mine. Blah blah blah. Boring. I skipped the cringy sex scenes. I know she is tiny and he is big dude. But in this one it mentions her shoulder bumps his elbow. Fw pages later they are holding hands. Um. That is like a parent holding a childs hand. That is not comfy. And how are they... I don't even wanna know. Ick. Not sexy in the least. Especially when war is happening. Don't need to know how horny you are every other page.
Violet gets one bad ass moment on the smart people island. Where has that girl been?
What was the point of the game of luck island? There was ZERO point of the gifts. Where is Broccoli?? Sure they got an army out of it. But we don't actually see them arrive. They talk about where they might station them. But it is never stated that said army arrived.
Andarna- huh? REally. She leaves. And then just pops back. And then is gone?
I don't understand the ending. I think the traitor thing didn't hit hard because I Don't Know Who He IS. I had to go look it up. Sure I recall hearing the name. But that's it.
What was the point of Jake? Jay? The venin kid. Why did they need to take him in the chest to Berwin? Who is that anyway. Is that the sage Xaden supposedly killed?
I really didn't get the point of Asher's books being left to Violet. Ddi that help? Was I just not paying attention by that point? Sigh. So he dedicated her to Dune? I guess I am not getting the implications. Or I just don't care

A fun read that took us beyond the continent. Much better pacing than iron flame. However, I hate how RY ends her books right after the climax of the plot. There is no resolution and it’s worse than a cliffhanger. I struggle to find the purpose of the book when Xaden essentially goes past the point of no return as a venin in the end. The next book cannot come soon enough.
