I Enjoyed the Story More then The Romance.

Toni Deserves so much more then Seb. Hayi no man.. This man is just bleh. šŸ˜‘
He is not for me even as a fictional man he is yho hayi it's like his a real life man no man.

The book and story was so good I loved the girls in the group they are such a fun family dynamic and I enjoyed that aspect a lot.

Friends-to-lovers. Slow burn (mainly because the MCs needed to get back to friends status first). I love how the author writes about music, or characters interacting with music, even though I didnā€™t understand it.

Ever since this book first popped up on my timeline as upcoming new release in 2021, I wanted to read this. I have no idea why it took me 2 years to go for it. Xio Axelrod is another author that has been sitting on my tbr list patiently and as she'll attend RARE24Paris, I took this as clue to finally go for this book.

Oh, this one was different from what I've read this year. I think it was very well written and even though it's in dual 3rd POV, I found myself quickly attached to Seb and Toni. Their story is a total slow burn and regardless that I found the story sometimes dragging, I simply couldn't put it down. I found myself intrigued by all characters and really wanted to follow Toni on her journey.

How I see it, the whole story revolves around Toni and I wish we would have gotten a little more of Seb's story. I think we just scratched the surface here of what he has to tell. I also have some questions about things I feel that haven't been answered.

I'm looking forward to read Kyla's story soon! And I promise, I won't wait 2 years after it's released ;-)

#24for 24
Book and Tamika Simone: 5 stars
Alexander Cendese: 1.5 stars

This review is for the audio version of this book.

Look. I love this book, particularly because I just find Axelrod's voice so clear. I do however want to say, it is much better to actually read this book than to listen to the audio version because the male narrator is just horrendous and completely drowns out the writing.

Tamika Simone does a lovely job with Toni B's voice; she has respect for the characters and for the story being told. Very well rounded and great emotional delivery.

Alexander Cendese. . . . the best way to describe his performance is "Used Car Salesman Brah." It is not only grating, because every sentence is read as if it will end with "and it costs only $9.99!", but it is also insulting. His voices for women and for BiPoc characters are pages right out of Don Rickles joke book full of stereotypes and derision. It is really a shame he was cast because the book and the character Seb deserves much more than this.

This was a super fun read about a band I would definitely listen to IRL. Seb and Toni getting reacquainted felt very authentic and didnā€™t skip past well deserved apologies/demonstrating personal growth. Getting to see the character development among the other members of the Lillys, even as just peripheral characters, was also really well done!

POV: third person omniscient, dual

You can expect: up and coming rock/pop band, found family, flashbacks, childhood friends to estranged to lovers, second chance, forced proximity.

Spice: 2/5

CW: neglectful family, manipulative family/side character, gambling addiction (side character)

I really enjoyed this book! It felt just as exciting as Daisy Jones & the Six but written more like a romance. The Lillys were such a cool band, and I loved MC Toniā€™s fierce independence and sticking to who she was and what she wanted for herself. I loved rooting for her to succeed and watching her goals evolve as she tried new things.

Only reason this wasnā€™t a 5 star for me were the spicy scenes. I feel like this book had such good storylines that the romance got in the way of the drive or music focus, which was my favorite part.

Overall, I loved this story and will definitely be looking for more by this author!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I love a good second-chance romance story but adding musicians and a girl rock band as the bulk of the story made it a must-read for me!

Toni Bennett didnā€™t have the easiest childhood. She had a mother who was more interested in being a star than being a mom and a dad who was forced to deal with a daughter unexpectedly and who seemed to have no interest in doing any actual raising of her. The only bright spot for Toni growing up came in the shape of her best friend Sebastian Quick. The pair connected over their love of music and had big plans to save money and escape their small town together. But out of nowhere, Seb leaves town without a word and never looks back leaving Toni heartbroken and confused.

Fast forward eight years later and Toni finds herself auditioning as a stand-in guitarist for a girl rock band, The Lilys when she runs into their ā€œmanagerā€ who happens to be her former bestie, Seb.

If you love music, second-chance romance, and girl power then this is the book for you! I have to say that my favorite part of the book has to be exploring the group and its dynamics. Each member had such a distinct personality and I just wanted to read more about every one of them! Iā€™m excited to read the rest of the series and see what the ladies get up to!
