I expected the scares and gore (of which there is pleeenty), but I didn't expect the depths Jones delves into his characters' traumas after the events of My Heart is a Chainsaw - this makes the S1 stakes in this book higher, which is important given that we get a good number of character introductions we know only exist so we know who died (sometimes a page later). this is an excellent follow-up that builds on the concerns of the first while maintaining the humor and shock. I read the last chapters with a delighted smile plastered across my face (sometimes paired with some cringing shoulders). and the nerve - the introduction of Dark Mills South feels like it could be its own book, but Jones slams it all into one go-for-broke chapter. I will follow SGJ anywhere - he's the real deal. bring on #3.

It was so fun to come back to Proofrock and see the aftermath of the Independence Day Massacre along with following Jade's journey. One big difference between Reaper and Chainsaw is that Reaper gives us lots of narratives from different characters. The reader gets a wider view of the town and it's people. A few of the narratives I felt were unnecessary but they were all well written. I especially enjoyed reading about Jade's mother, Leatha, Banner and Hardy. I was a little confused on "the other killer" and their role in the slayings. Loved it. Love SGJ!

It took me a lot longer to get through this compared to My Heart is a Chainsaw, but I’m glad I did. 3.5 stars.

This was such a fantastic sequel to My Heart is a Chainsaw. It takes place four years after the first book ended. Deliciously creepy, fantastic dialogue, connecting plot threads, more points of view, and amped up gore and violence. This was a love letter to the slasher genre. In typical slasher fashion, the sequel needs to stay true to the formula but up the stakes, and it did not disappoint. My one complaint is that I wish we had more of Jade. I loved following her journey in the first book. However, I love that Jade has changed and grown and it has such a huge payoff at the end. I cannot wait to get to the next book!

Don't Fear the Reaper expands on its predecessor in ways I didn't expect. And the emotional drive from the characters after suffering from such a traumatic event steadily grows chapter by chapter. It was a bit of a slow start, but it inevitably hooked me (pun intended) and I couldn't put it down.

The writing is just immaculate! The way Stephen Graham Jones puts attention to detail on key moments, especially when things get really dark, satisfied the hell out of me. And I loved the mystery surrounding the Dark Mill South Killer, I was completely enthralled whenever his presence was felt. And Stephen took the story to places I wasn't expecting, which leaves the third book in this trilogy completely wide out in the open for anything to happen!

Very minor nitpicks, like some complexities that are slightly head scratchy and perhaps some pacing issues. But other than that, this slasher fan absolutely loved this! Definitely a small step above My Heart is a Chainsaw. Onto the final book in the trilogy! 🔥🩸❤️

Absolutely as good if not better than the first in the series!
