Had some good moments, the way the characters developed over the course of the book was nice to see although they could be infuriating at times and somewhat unlovable. The chapters are shared out between 3 characters and I thought they’d cross over more which might have made it more interesting for me but just felt a little unnecessary have the story be from three perspectives, it didn’t really add much overall. Felt the ending was a little rushed with the way each characters stories wrapped up. I don’t really know what I was expecting going in to this book but I can’t help feeling a little underwhelmed/ disappointed coming out of it.

Pensé que se había un libro sobre perros y creo que más bien es un libro acerca de salud mental.

A book with dog in the title? Sign me up!

This one has been on my kindle for a wee while and I decided to start reading it towards the end of my honeymoon when I was missing my own little pooches greatly!

As I mentioned in my monthly wrap up, I very much enjoyed this book but maybe not for the reasons that I initially thought I would. It’s an easy enough read that I sailed through but with some hefty topics (definitely look up trigger warnings) at its heart and it was definitely a lot more serious than maybe I first thought it might be.

Although dogs are the common thread in the novel, we actually follow three unconnected people who live in the same town. They’re all dealing with different issues and I became thoroughly engrossed in each of their stories. George, the belligerent old man with a sausage dog puppy, was obviously going to be my favourite, but the other two I found very interesting too, if not necessarily likeable.

Ultimately this is a story of grief, loneliness, mental health, finding love, but also the healing power of dogs. They really are the best!

I am honestly so torn about this book because while there are elements that I liked, there was just so much I was baffled by. Like many other reviewers, I felt the blurb was deceiving and not actually representative of what the book is about? Add in some honestly quite problematic characters that, if you can reconcile yourself to not actually liking them, still have enough nuance in their stories that make them compelling. But the book is so drawn out on what the "secret" for each character is, that the big reveal feels sensational rather than authentic. You dont get enough backstory to explain the why of each character, why they react the way they do or how they reached this place, so when you learn the what, it still feels surface-level. It is a pity because I had really high hopes for this book.

I really enjoyed Dog Days, it was such a strong character driven story. The three main characters had large internal struggles, all of them facing pretty big demons and not knowing how to get past them. The story wove around these characters in such a way that I began to feel like I knew them all and wanted them all to find peace. The tale watched them grow and fall throughout. It was told from their POVs switching between characters every chapter, the chapters were not too short that it was hard to follow but long enough that you got a good insight into what was happening.
Overall this was a great story filled with fantastic description and some nice twists that I didn't see coming and which kept me interested throughout. The side characters were necessary and exciting (dare I say flamboyant) and they gave the characters narratives more depth. I recommend you grab a copy yourself!

Definitely more heartfelt and sad than I was expecting from this book, very deep and moving in places but I enjoyed it. Anything with dogs is always a bonus!
