wait! Quick mini rant about ratings:

Before you start to think that's a low rating I find myself hating the star ratings anyway. I'm not great at it. A five star books needs to be a favorite I would read over and over and love it forever and a 4 star should be up there with giving me all the feelings.

Unless I state I hate it and you would know if I did then it's fine. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying something didn't waste my time.

It's about being entertained. Or learning something. It's stepping outside your body and letting your mind focus on something outside of yourself. Books are these wonderful gifts that warm my heart. Seriously. They are incredible and humbling and exciting. They are other people's thoughts and ideas put to paper. They are words and opinions and imagery so outside of you, yet when you read it then it becomes yours and you decide what you want to do with it. It's magic.

Ok ok. End of rant and word appreciation.

Did I love it ? No.

Did I think this was terrible and
Would never recommend it to anyone? no. Of course I would.

Everyone's taste are different. We all have things that check our boxes and things that annoy us to no end.

This series has potential to be great.

I liked it.

The beginning was a bit slow, and I wasn't sure if I could get into it. The more time I spent on it the more I liked it.

I like werewolves.

Really any kind of shifter trope I like. They were my favorite folk lore growing up besides scary stories of changlings and fey. And I usually like them in romance novels.

So I find a book and the main character is a badass female werewolf? Neat.

Then you find out she's the only one ever? Super neat.

So I give it a try

I liked the pack interactions which I felt like they generally cared for each other . I liked that they had their own rules or code on how they hunt and work.

I even liked the love story with an established relationship. ( which I normally don't like because I like beginnings. Sue me ) it's hard to write a relationship that's already had history before we start our story because it's hard to write that kind of familiarity and it not feel forced. I want to believe. That's why love at first sight/ Insta-love bothers me so much. Build up is a good thing. But I think the author did a good job. I felt like it was complicated, that you didn't know if they were going to workout because it didn't before. It was interesting.

I started it as a audiobook but switched to physical copy soon after because I couldn't get into the narration. It did feel like I was being told a story instead of being shown if that makes sense. Show me don't tell me what's happening. I'm smart (kinda) I can figure it out.

I liked the characters enough where when they were idiots I could overlook it. The main character (Elena) was annoying with her being stubborn and downright prideful at times but she should have flaws. I don't want my main character to be a Mary Sue.
The main guy (clay) had faults and I they worked well together. And the "love triangle" wasn't nearly as annoying as I thought it would be. I did feel like Phillip wasn't needed except for a reason for Elena to feel tied to the human world. And that wasn't fair to him. I don't like cheating and it annoyed me. Like put on your big girl pants and either brake up with him or keep it in your pants.

Would I read it again ? Probably not.

But I am going to continue the series even if I don't know when I'll pickup the next book. I think I read its actually finished to so I don't have to wait for an ending.

I think it's worth a read if you can look past some of the negatives I've brought up and the tropes because of course they use some.

Thanks for reading
SJ

At first, the premise seemed kind of interesting with a somewhat intriguing plot and a couple of exciting character dynamics, but in the end I just wasn’t impressed. Nothing really led anywhere, and I couldn’t find it in me to care about any of it. Everything quickly became boring as well as repetitive, and I wasn’t a fan of the writing style either.

Also, I didn’t connect with the main characters at all as I found her to be unnecessarily combative, whiny and just overall a pretty terrible person. I genuinely couldn’t stand her.
The romance was also plenty awful; they had no chemistry whatsoever and all they did was fight or fuck. It was insanely shallow and extremely annoying.

Lastly, when it comes to the actual story, I struggled to root for “The Pack” since the way they treated “mutts” just seemed completely wrong. They treated them like second rate citizens for nothing more than the place they were born. It was discrimination in the highest degree. Thus, I honestly felt like a revolution against The Pack was more than justified, so I couldn’t find it in me to hope for The Pack’s victory. That definitely wasn’t my idea of a happy ending.

I was reluctant to read this story thinking that it was going to drag and take me weeks to read. Boy! Was I wrong. I opened the book, started reading the prologue, and I couldn't put the book down. The snapshot style of the author's narration was refreshing, modern, and spirited. I enjoyed the sense of realism that the story is told with. How the characters are fallible and mortal though they're Werewolves.

I found the world building impressive and detailed. I just didn't like the main character. I found Elena disagreeable. I found her constant attempts at keeping Clay at a distance annoying. And I detested her relationship with Phillip. I literally felt like I was reading an oatmeal label when they were interacting. But Clayton was all Alpha, and although he has some personality traits that are undesirable, I found myself completely giving those minor character flaws a pass. The last portion of the book was highly addictive and entertaining.

I assumed it was going to be some clichéd PNR novel with romance and some half-assed sub plot.

I was really surprised with this one.

For starters, there is no half-assery with Kelley Armstrong. She did everything all the way. The plot was very detailed and remained noticing throughout. I don't know, maybe it was the characters, maybe the unpredictability of the plot that kept me wanting to turn the page. The setting was detailed and unique. And the ending was downright perfect.

The characters.... They deserve a review of their own. The Paranormal Genre is chalkfull of macho male shifters strutting their stuff and slipping in some sexist and degrading comments like it's nobody's business) Despite Bitten being àn almost/completely male dominated novel, it never felt like it came off as some weird or unbalanced. Each character was pleasantly unique and very memorable.

The romance?

Clayton is like the aforementioned macho males who strut their stuff. He pines after Elena like a tween after boy band concert tickets. And other stuff. He isn't usually the type of character I would like. I shouldn't be liking him. But I do. Because somehow, his pining doesn't annoy me. The way he does it, or rather why he does it makes it so beautiful. Also, he is downright crazy with his murderous tendencies but I find him really awesome. He is tough but he isn't insecure about his own masculinity like many (and you know who) males in the PRN genre. He has confidence in Elena and isn't always second guessing her intelligence or her capabilities. And overall, for someone who pines, he gives a lot of space to Elena. He is really respective of her choices and her role as a member in their pack. Really rare in any genre, really.

PNR novels have a shitload of characters and sub- plot lines. Most of them all clump up together in my head, or I ignore others completely, but the plot and he characters really held my attention

I feel like this book could be taken a step further so I haven't added that last star.
