Lots of war drama and not as much about the royal setting as past books

As I was reading, I felt that she undid a lot of Jacquetta’s positive qualities and made her seem more greedy and cold. Still a great story. Elizabeth, The White Queen, is the mother of the ‘Princes in the Tower’ which is a fascinating historical legend in itself. As always, the storytelling is compelling and engaging. Just wish Jacquetta’s character wasn’t painted in such a different light than she was in the first book-plus her exit from the story is so abrupt I wasn’t even sure it happened. This is such a sad story. What an awful time to be alive!

I enjoy the political and social intrigue of these historical novels. While the concept is the author’s, it is interesting to read a story from a different perspective. And the War of the Roses is a good time to allow this to happen.

Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction always makes an enjoyable read in that she brings a light and easy touch to the history and court intricacies of whichever historical period she is writing about. This book is the first of her trilogy about the Plantagenets, which is the period before the much written about rule of the Tudors and Henry VIII.

Eh. I appreciate what this book did to affix some history in my mind. That said, I found myself rolling my eyes through most of it. Didn't like any of the characters. Better written than a romance novel...but that's really not saying much.
