I really enjoyed this book, a bit different to what I am used to. I really liked the Marvel references throughout as marvel movies are my favourite so I definitely enjoyed thoes parts 😂

*Netgalley very kindly provided me with a copy of this*

I can’t remember the last time I read a book about normal British teens and this was. So. BOMB. Like I literally loved it!

I loved all the characters, this had some great rep in it (but like casual rep which is the best kind, not forced rep) and the relationships between them were written really well. Plus it was a multi POV and I didn’t get bored with any of them!
I also loved the plot, not a new idea per se but with enough new elements to make it feel unique & different. Plus it was actually really funny (my favourite thing in books

Thank you so much Pansing for sending me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review! Every Little Piece of My Heart by Non Pratt is available at all good bookstores.

Every Little Piece of My Heart by Non Pratt is a character-driven story of understanding, acceptance and friendship. It centers around four teenagers (or more accurately, five, considering how involved Sunny [Win’s sister] gets) that share one mutual person they know: Freya, who is desired/adored/envied by many, seems to have everything she wants, can easily get whatever she desires in life, and who appears to have ghosted all the people she left behind…until a parcel with her handwriting appears on best friend Sophie’s doorstep.

Now, I must admit that this book reminds me very much of Jay Asher’s [b:Thirteen Reasons Why|29844228|Thirteen Reasons Why|Jay Asher|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1555345043l/29844228._SY75_.jpg|2588213] and that due to this, I had the expectation that something bad had happened to Freya or that she ran away. For the first half of the book, I was pretty much constantly at the edge of my seat waiting for a confirmation that my hunches were right (I know, I’m the idiot who didn’t check the genre tags before diving into this book). Unfortunately (or fortunately, because otherwise this book would just be a repeat of Thirteen Reasons Why), I was wrong and well…the book became a little more dull to me.

The plot was very typical and the story was not as emotional as I thought it’d be. Sure, I cried a little at some parts but ultimately, it feels like there were a lot of opportunities for the author to make a character more human or an event more meaningful but those opportunities were missed. The characters aren’t really developed, especially when it comes to Lucas, Ryan and Sunny. Win and Sophie are better, though Sophie’s character development is, in my opinion, the best.

I think this story would’ve had more impact had it been written in fewer points of view, or if Freya had the opportunity to show her true self through her own point of view instead of through the eyes of others because let’s be real, she will definitely wear a mask when she’s around other people. It just depends on which mask she chooses so the way others see her is a result of the mask they’re shown (thus, the clever title of this book) and the fact that we never actually get to know who the real Freya is.

Nevertheless, I think that the diversity in characters and representation of this diversity are done really well. I’m so amazed by the Chinese pinyin and how, finally, I can relate to a (partially) Chinese character in a non-Asian setting/inspired book written by a non-Chinese author. I truly appreciate the research done by the author and how they’d done their best portraying the characters as authentically as possibly without letting the pacing suffer.

Everything considered, Every Little Piece of My Heart was an average read for me. The open ending was frustrating since it felt rather sudden and I would’ve loved to see the friendship between the four teenagers grow more before anything else (like what happened at the end) happens. It also wasn’t funny, though? Maybe I’m just too removed culturally or maybe I’m just getting old or maybe slice-of-life contemporary YA isn’t my thing anymore, but yeah.

I will be honest; I bought this book because of the cover and the author. Did not even read the blurb before. I enjoyed it and I am glad I read it (in a day).
This book has some mystery vibes: who is Freya, why she sent the parcel, why she left, why those 4 people chosen to receive the parcel? It keeps you reading as you want to unravel the mystery.
Amazing work with the multiple voices. I like reading books where different characters have the chance to speak and present their story and their opinions. It feels much more powerful and impacting. Not only does this book have multi character chapters, it has a wider variety of character background and gender identity: Asian, Queer, Chronic Illness.
The plot is well written, and each mini chapter peals a new layer in order to get to the centre and unravel the mystery. The story starts on a Friday, when Sophie receives a parcel from her best friend, Freya, who has been gone to Manchester for some time, and who chose to cut everyone out from her previous life. The story is like a game of ‘pass the parcel’ – a small gift for each person that opens the parcel and a name on the parcel inside, with the promise that there will be treasure at the end. Read the book and find out how the 4 (or maybe 5) main characters interact and build relationships.
I have enjoyed this book and I will be recommending it to my friends.
