this book was very good! it was well-written and exciting. and it reaffirmed my misandry (I HATE MEN). i thoroughly enjoyed the three different povs from three generations of the same matriarchal line. it was. nothing like i expected, though! i went in blind thinking it would be fantastical and witchy, and instead it was moving and tense. i was on edge pretty much the entire time. the magic aspect was more toned down than i expected, but i really enjoyed it. the themes of scorned women/womanhood in general and justice and fear and violence and power were all very emotional. it was a very sadly realistic look at generations of trauma that women have had to live through.

for me, personally, the book dealt with topics that i generally have on my “do not read” list. this story was told brilliantly, but it was definitely a hard read for me. while i loved the FMCs and their story, it was a bit much for me emotionally. i also feel as though the entire plot was a bit obvious from about 40% in. the writing was extremely well done though and the story was beautiful; it was just hard on me personally !! will def be checking out this author again in the future!

This was an intense read at times but I was captivated by the 3 female lead characters in ther subsequent years, each living different lives but still connected by blood, name and soul. I especially liked hearing Alther’s accounts. The written language for her really did transport me back in time and I found it fascinating how they treated women and what they deemed ‘witchery’ back in the day. In each time setting it really felt like their surroundings and creatures within it were an entire entity of its own, you could feel and sense everything along with them.

This was gut wrenching through certain events so if you’ve experienced any of the above triggers I’d be cautious about reading this. Despite the difficult theme which ran throughout, I enjoyed this story. I thought it was cleverly written and each Weyward had such heart and depth to their character. I loved the epilogue from Violet and found it tied everything together in a magical/serendipitous way.

TW: Domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape.

Sometimes I find books told from different perspectives across different time periods a little tedious, so was a little apprehensive ahead of this one as there were three characters to follow. However, Hart weaves the stories together really satisfactorily and I found it easy to hold all the threads together. (However, I’m quite a fast reader and read it in little over a day so if you were reading this over the course of a longer time, it might not be as easy!) I really enjoyed reading this book; it is well-told with characters you absolutely root for and fall in love with. The natural-style magic was really interesting, particularly the connections with insects. The story itself is tense and mysterious in a way where you’re comfortable; you sort of know how it’s going to end and that’s okay. I’d recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel something. God, I love women.

Oof the generational trauma really hit for this one. I appreciated the ending but there were some trigger warning moments for sure.
