L'esorcista

Doubt/uncertainty is THE major theme here. Just about every character has some sort of doubt: about self, about life, about the case, etc.

As a matter of fact, I think the only character in the piece who DOESN'T doubt is the demon himself!

This novel also tangles with the issue of the blurry line between the end of demonic activity and the beginning of mental illness, or vice versa.

Far more suspenseful than the film, I might add!

Worth the hype and then some. Vile, heartbreaking, and deeply personal.

When the summer breeze brings a sudden icy chill, trust that it is nothing more than the demon king of wind singing his praise for the classic horror tome that is The Exorcist. The terrors inflicted by the Son of Hanbi upon young Reagan are not for the faint of heart or stomach. I loved this tale of tested faith and strength of will. This book quieted whatever room I found myself in and it is in that haunted silence where I found myself in awe of Evil, and breathless in the tearing battle against it.

Highly recommend listening to the audiobook because it is read by the Author and he puts his WHOLLLEEEEE p*ssy into those line readings. His voice acting for the individual characters is impressive and really submerges you into the story. Also if you are a fan of the movie this of course serves as a great companion. Filling in some details that the film couldn't elaborate on. I liked getting to know the characters better, especially Father Karras.

I have rarely been so bored while waiting to be scared. If you want long and scary, pick up House of Leaves or IT.

The last like 40-50 pages of this book are an intense & thrilling ride. One of the reasons I enjoy rereading this one each year.

Not fully sure of the rating yet, I’m going to sleep on it. I wouldn’t say it scared me per se, but I really enjoyed the story, how disturbing it was, and the ending was impactful. I also enjoyed the struggle with faith and trying to rationalize things that can’t easily be explained.

Edit: I’m landing on 4.25. It feels wrong to give it just 4 stars for some reason lol
