I've read sci-fi books set in the far future, after the ecological collapse. This is one of the few set on the dividing time between Before and After. I'm not sure about the magical element of the lights, but as Phyllis says, things are magic until we understand then it's science. I guess if the lights weren't included it would all be too hopeless; this fantasy element is a nice dream to help the horrible story--compete collapse of Florida society/civilization/infrastructure/climate--a bit more palatable. I sure hope I'm dead before this story comes true.

Set in Florida with climate change as an integral part of the book, it was cautionary.
When I first read the blurb of this book, I was excited to read it. Having been living in Florida for the last 25 years, I wanted to see how the author approached the topics of hurricanes, the changes caused by climate change and the gradual decay to the crumbling infrastructure. The book opened with a bang and the first couple of chapters were electrifying and grabbed you and sucked you right in. The description of the weather, the humidity, living through a hurricane in a small town were very well narrated and besides that the dramatic events happening drew to the characters and made you invested in the story. Fast forward to the middle of the book and it went downhill. The timeline of the decay was too accelerated to be somewhat realistic, but that was not even what put me off the book. For some bizarre reason she added a magical feature to one of the characters, but that did not add anything to the story and no events happen to either explain why that happened neither she wrote any events after where this created an interesting plot twist or added another depth to the character or anything. I felt it was completely unnecessary and in my opinion took away from the story. But all in all it was a good story with an uninteresting ending.

Incredibly captivating and also scary dire horribly real premise! I thought the best parts were the unexpected ones but there was a lot of narrative that did feel.... somewhat expected? Gave me a lot to think ab and felt like a real Book Clubby book so that was great. Gay rights!
Easily the best read this year. Such a scary, wonderful story of change, adaptation and perseverance. This will be one that has me thinking about it time and time again!
Libby audio. BOTM pick. This was more dystopian than I was expecting. The book jumps ahead in time in large chunks.
A perfect combination of bleak realism, the complexity of human relationships, hope, and the unexplainable. Similar in feel to Where the Crawdads Sing but its very own unique story.
