Overall, a really good time! This book does a great job of transporting you into the true, nasty Victorian era, language and chapter introductions and all. It's a quick and easy read, and gives you just enough gore and nastiness of the kills without going so in-depth that it's hard to stomach. This is a great horror/slasher novel without being splatterpunk, and the descriptions are rich with life (and death). That being said, some minor plot-holes here and there, and while the language really lent itself to the world of the story, I was grateful I was reading the ebook so I could quickly get definitions of words so I could get a proper understanding of what exactly the narrator was talking about.

Shocking, not particularly clever. Unreliable narrator doesn't quite explain the plot holes. I hope the movie takes a cue from The Substance and plays up the grossness, it's the most memorable part.

This book is insane! It is gruesome and gory yet delicious at the same time! Don’t read this if you have a weak stomach, but for those who have a strong one or are just as weird as I am, bite into this book as hard as you can and don’t let go.

Whilst wildly different to my past reviews, “Victorian Psycho” is a fast-paced, frivolously frightening descent into the gruesomely ghastly world of Winifred Notty; a protagonist so charmless in her bug-eyed brilliance and horrific humour, it made the less palatable, insecure parts of the novel more acceptable, or at least easier to ignore. Feito’s historical remarks are as viciously funny as they are factual accurate — a refreshing relief to many history-snobs like myself.  Similarly, Feito’s mix of modern and Victorian styles of prose and character(s) are comparatively well-balanced albeit still unhinged in their presentation; although it would have been nice to have the other characters, besides Notty (and to an extent Drusilla), be more “fleshed out” (pun intended).

If I have not already made it abundantly clear, the novel is not for the faint of heart; even my stomach churned at certain moments! It shares a variety of graphic gore, an unpleasant cast of deliciously despicable characters and a form of prose and narration some may find off-putting. Yet, if you delight in the disturbed and sometimes wish to axe an annoying man in the face — then maybe ‘The Darkness’ might be calling out to you.

This book was a psychotic fever dream from start to finish. It is equal parts tragic, sad, and utterly disgusting. Clearly I’m in my feminine rage reading era, because I loved this book. It’s such a quick and easy read. But definitely be aware that there is body horror, graphic descriptions of murder of children and animals, gross food stuff, and brief mentions of DV. This book is definitely not for everyone, and maybe read reviews and check trigger warnings before you read it.
