3.5 stars.
I enjoyed this sequel but did not love it the 2nd time around. I found it tedious to get through.
The characters had no growth since they were already pretty well developed from the 1st book. I just hoped we would see more development and exploration for Brienna. The plot twists did surprise me as I had forgotten most of the plot points.
It depicts the reality of what happens after a war is won...the clean up, trying to gather allies, prosecuting the criminals. I loved getting into Cartier's head in this. I love him and Brienna. I feel like the first book was better cause I absolutely adore The Queen's Rising.
I can't wait to read more books by Rebecca Ross.

This book started off somewhat slow for me. Maybe it was the switch to dual POV, but it took me about 20-30% to really get into it. But after it started to pick up I couldn’t put it down.
I really liked getting to know more about Maevana and all of the different families. It did feel a little more gruesome and violent than the first book—par for the course with the villain she created. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more about the magic system-like what kinds of magic is there, is everyone’s different, etc—especially if magic is a requirement to rule. Overall a nice end to the duology.

So we follow Brienna in the after math of the war that took place to put the queen back on the throne, I really liked this book I liked it a tad bit more than the first due to there was some Romance between Cartier as Brienna. And I love seeing them together. I also love that the Queen, Brienna and Cartier doesn’t want the children to pay for the former king mistakes. But the city is asking for justice and are also blaming the children for there behavior. So they are trying to convince the city that the children are victims as well and i love the part of the painting with the ribbon in order to marry Brienna a ribbon is hidden in a painting and has to find.

When I heard this book existed, I was disappointed because I didn’t think the first book needing a sequel and I believed that anything that came after the glorious masterpiece of The Queen’s Rising would be subpar. However, I was happily surprised with an amazing book that lives up to its predecessor! As stated in my review of the first book, my only complaint is about the family trees. Characters that died in The Queen’s Rising are listed as living. That small flaw can be overlooked, though. I highly recommend this duology and it has become one of my favorite series.

It's cute, it's fun, it's pretty predictable. It's nothing special, but I did enjoy it.
I am bawling. That's all you need to know. Read this book. Now.
