I really don’t like poetry and though I liked this book more than I’d thought, thanks to the dark fantasy elements as well as the sublime narration, I sadly have to admit it’s not my kind of book, especially part 2.

In this renowned tale, philosopher and scientist Faust makes a dark deal with the demon Mephistopheles: selling his soul to the Devil in exchange for untold knowledge and power. Part I explores his doomed romance with, and the corruption and destruction of, the virtuous maiden Gretchen. Part II follows Faust's journey through time and space: manipulating an Emperor and pursuing the famed beauty, Helen of Troy. Has Faust fallen into mortal peril, or does his soul still have a chance of salvation?
Although this particular translation has been performed, its poetic stucture makes it function as a read-only text, even though it is sometimes slow-flowing and a little difficult to read. Heavy symbolism and some truly complex, lyrical language features here, especially in Part II... where a working knowledge of Greco-Roman myth also helps a bunch. I personally preferred Part I of the play, as I became quite invested in the story of Faust and Gretchen, and Mephistopheles gets some great fourth-wall breaks and some really witty lines.
A classic story that should be read and enjoyed, but I'd understand if you preferred a lighter version with more accessible language!

I listened to the audiobook for this one, narrated by Jack Wynters and I want to shout that out for how great he was.
My scores would be more accurately put as 4 stars for the 1st book and 3 for the 2nd one. They both have a lot of dull moments and a lot of the times the story drags on and on and on, but that's to be expected for what it actually is: a script of a play.
Personally, I found the 1st book to be the more interesting one, it being the introduction of the characters and the show of their relationships, interests and personalities. The 2nd book was... strange. I wasn't expecting to wake up to a Greek mythology lesson to be honest, so that threw me just a bit off.
The biggest disappointment was the ending. To be completely honest, I would have happily rather watch Faust be dragged to the depths of hell, as is would have been fair. But I mean the story does show how hypocritical god is so maybe it's way more accurate LMFAO

Well as a story it was pretty good. I guess it is a problem with translations and I found this one quite jerky in his effort to keep with the poetry. I will read this again from another translator and see if it changes my mind.
Single biggest source of (faux-)intellectual quotes in the German language. As most people, I enjoyed part one and was baffled by part two. As most people, I expect this will change over the years.
Related books are mostly books that quote Faust heavily, I'm afraid, since there's not much else to be done with it.

Ah! Now I’ve done Philosophy,
I’ve finished Law and Medicine,
And sadly even Theology:
Taken fierce pains, from end to end.
Now here I am, a fool for sure,
No wiser than I was before!

“Faust” ist die Zigarettenschachtel für jeden Nichtraucher oder die Kaugummi-Packung für jeden Nicht-Kaugummi-Kauer. Jede Zugwartezeit vergeht wie im Flug, wenn man eine “Faust”-Ausgabe in seiner Jackentasche hat. Man muss nur willkürlich irgendeine Seite aufschlagen um jedes Mal aufs neue verzaubert zu werden.
