WOW. This was so much fun to read. I loved all of the historical characters that I recognized. I could tell the author put a lot of thought and research into this book because the setting was incredible. It felt like a scavenger hunt! The only reason this wasn’t a full 5⭐️ was because of how big of an idiot Tor was for a lot of this book. I gave him a pass on somethings but he got on my nerves enough to kill the mood a couple times.

2.5 stars - Sigh, I keep hoping I will find another "Outlander" - a fantastic historical story with the perfect amount of romance sprinkled in. This story fared better than many in the same genre with having a decent plot that included real historical figures (a plus for me), but far, far, far too much of the story focused on the romance aspect for my own personal tastes.

Ugghh why was this so highly recommended? He's absolutely toxic in every way, and there is ZERO reason to believe he would change. The book has not aged well, it's really obvious that it was written 15 years ago. It actually feels like it was written in the 90s.

The relationship is based on insta-love. It could actually have been built on more, the timeline is long enough, except his "flaw" is that he outright refuses to get to know his wife, or let her get to him him. So their infatuation is not based on anything substantial. He also doesn't respect her as a person. He respects his former mistress more and shows that with his actions. She keeps "making mistakes" because he doesn't tell her things, and instead treats this as a reason to tell her less. This is bananas. He could use her as his own spy when he's gone. He's supposed to be such a good strategist, he just sucks at it.

Also, this book is SO LONG! It could have been half this length with how much storytelling was actually involved.

Loved it! Couldn't put it down...

The only thing bothering me was that there were so many names and all sounded similar... I'm not very good at remembering names so sometimes I was like ''Who attacked who? Eh, who cares. It's the MCs that are important.''

I just loved this book. Mainly because of the historical context in which the narrative takes place. Of course, the focus of the story is the novel, but all the background of revolt against the English throne is very present.

The protagonist was a young woman, very innocent, romantic and intelligent. Normally I don't like such innocent protagonists, but I understand that, given the whole way she was raised and the way women were treated at the time, innocence was something to be expected of a 20-something girl. Besides being very cute, she is also very smart and hardworking. I found her development during the book gratifying.

The protagonist, even though he is very headstrong when talking about his wife and his feelings for her, it makes you understand why he is that way, making him not want to have a connection with anyone.

The couple had a lot of chemistry and I liked the story development. I want to meet more of the other warriors led by Tor.

It's lucky that Christina is basically a saint because Tor is kind of a jerk. I get that he had emotional trust issues and stuff, but he treats her like absolute crap for the majority of the book. Every single thing that she does to try and be nice and prove her wifely goodness blows up in her face. Frankly, I would have given up on him and his cold, emotionless state long before she does.

Fabulous!

Loved this book. Captivating from the outset, I love that the protagonists are loosely based on real historical figures and that the events of the book happen in a "real" period of history. A brilliant blend of fiction and history!
