This was my first Monica McCarty book but it sure won't be the last. The style of McCarty's writing and the story itself reminded me very much of Julie Garwood's Scottish romances.

I like the concept and all the male characters. I loved the chief but I didn't really warm up to the heroine. She wasn't a strong enough leading lady and I failed to understand exactly why the hero fell in love with her given her selfish and childish antics (maybe I'm being unfair because she loves Lancelot and Guinevere so much and I just can't understand what's so great about a knight that breaks his oath to his king and a lady that's cheating on her husband.. But that's probably just me.). Her character knocked off one star from my rating.

There was so much actual story with sporadic (really well written) love scenes that fit the characters and story arch.

I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series and other books by this author.

I liked the idea of an elite group of highlanders. Even though this is a romance, I really wished there was more time spent focusing on this aspect. What absolutely killed it for me was our heroine. Christina annoyed me to no end, I think she was too much of a damsel for me.

3.75- honestly had to skim over one silly part but otherwise I️ enjoyed this book. The ending felt a bit rushed but I will accept it.

This book was okay. Too verbose for my liking and there were quite a few errors, most notable is the Christina/Christine errors. Too long and dragged for a majority of the book. Pretty sure I skimmed about 70%.

The romance is such a minor role with politics and "military" stuff taking precedence. I came for the romance and was mostly let down... A decade ago, this would have been my jam as I loved romantic suspense and military romance then. Not so much (er...not at all?) now. I don't think I'll continue with the series.

3.5. Stars!

I really like novels about Highlanders! What I like about this book is that it has historical facts and there is war, political relations related with romance. Tor is a dream of any women (myself if I my say) but his behavior drived me nuts! And Christine... So naive. Her behavior bugged me the most, although at the end she did the right thing. I'm looking forward for next novels in this seria.

Book one - check!

A bit “damsel in distress” for my tastes. Seriously, this girl needs rescuing a lot.

Good start to the series. I liked that the author used real historical figures to make it more believable. An enjoyable read - will definitely read book 2.

I am on a journey to find the best Highlander romance/historical and it's starting to pay off.
Contrary to yesterday's books, this one was very good! I give it 3.5 stars.

I liked the romance, although, I was getting very frustrated with the male main character. He really gave a good fight to try not to fall for the female character. However, like all tall, dark and broody highlanders, he eventually lost the fight and surrendered! *snickers*

One thing that I didn't like is that typical/cliché "change of heart", by this I mean that he struggled to embrace their love until the very last possible moment. Only when threatened but the possibility of being left by Christina did Tor have his "change of heart" and admitted to himself and then to her that he loved her. Suddenly he is off galloping to save her and claim her as the love of his life- in case I am not being clear I am being sarcastic. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine.

Despite this, I kind of liked it, and under the circumstances, the struggles they faced when they first married are justified somewhat.

Now, what really captured my attention, and made me like this book more than any other Highlander romance I've read so far, was the backstory! Tor is to become The Chief of Robert Bruce's Highland Guard to uphold the Scottish king's cause and claim to the throne. Also, to defeat King Edward Plantagenet and England.

Omg, this is what I live for in highlander romances. The political/historical landscape that provided the plot for this book, other than the main relationship was so well crafted and the whole "highland guard" *swoons*. One of the best in this very specific sub-genre.

I have very high hopes that Monica McCarthy will become a favorite author in this genre. Initially, I really wanted to read her McLeods of Skye Trilogy first, but then I became intrigued by this series and started with this one and I can't say I am disappointed.

I am definitely going to devour this series and read the other books.
