I typed in “tear my heart out book” on TikTok and this came up. I was excited to get heart broken and yet, I never cried once. It was good. An interesting view into the life of an addict. I would definitely check the trigger warnings if that’s something you deal with. Overall, I liked the book but it just wasn’t what I was looking for at the moment.

I loved this!!!! Definitely check your triggers, but I loved the way it highlighted trauma, the masking of trauma, addiction, belief in self. Kid was phenomenal, Han was beautiful and I just loved everything about it. I went on a roller coaster of emotions, I laughed, I cried, I had warm fuzzies, I was shocked, I was scared. Love, love, loved!

DID NOT FINISH: 75%

Stopped at chapter 41 to give it a proper chance. I love Kai and I was excited to read his story. While I felt so much empathy for him and Johanna as individuals, I could not get behind them as a couple. I never felt the connection between the two and didn’t understand how he fell in love with her. I get that the book is about addiction but it felt like I was just reading a compilation of parties, binges and sex scenes. Sadly, it wasn’t the book for me which is a shame because ‘Hawke’ is one of my favorites. I would still recommend the book because I don’t ever want to discourage anyone from reading what might be their new favorite book 🙌🏼

Kid was a mess in Hawke, and yep—he’s still a beautiful mess here. But now he’s met his match in Han, who’s just as closed off and chaotic as he is. She’s got walls built to last, and she’s not looking for a wrecking crew, which makes their dynamic all kinds of tense. This one’s a slow burn—way more introspective than I expected. Kid wants to help Han, but considering his own life is in shambles, that’s easier said than done. There’s something raw about two broken people shattering and trying to piece themselves back together.

But I kept waiting for more to happen, and it just… didn’t. And when Han’s past finally came to light? It should’ve wrecked me, but too much time had passed—I wasn’t as emotionally locked in as I wanted to be. It didn’t hit me like Hawke did, but there’s still something compelling about their beautifully messy journey.

This one definitely puts the dark in dark romance — be sure to read the content warning at the beginning of the book before diving in. That being said, there’s ~lots of spice! I loved all of the snippets of Cam and Cole’s life post-Hawke, and now I want to reread their story all over again!

“I’m always proud of you, even when you fail.”

I cannot say enough good things about this book. As someone who is the child of two people who battle/d addiction, and grew up surrounded by this lifestyle, I resonated with this story and its characters.

This story follows Kid & Han, our MMC & FMC. They are both battling their own demons and addictions. It becomes a fight to save not only themselves, but each other, from themselves.

Jescie Hall did it again with her way of writing a delicate topic with such precision. Her writing is able to help readers understand the deeper impact of trauma and how it can permeate every facet of one’s life and decisions.

Many people find Han insufferable. That’s fine. That is your opinion. However, keep in mind, though Han is a fictional character, she is real for a lot of people. Especially those that battle addiction. Her character, her decisions, her responses were REAL and comparable to those who do struggle.

Addiction isn’t pretty. It isn’t fun. It isn’t logical.

This story does contain heavy drug use, SH & suicide. Please check your trigger warnings before diving into this one if any of these topics may be sensitive for you.

Kid has my heart and now I want some taxidermy animals!

Han is a free spirit that is tortured with her past. Kid is a drug dealer and user just living day to day. They meet up at a party and Kid is hooked. He loves her crassness and he is one intrusive thought away from getting his ass beat! He becomes obsessive about her and she’s such a free spirit and doesn’t want to be tied down. He knows she been through something because she is beyond guarded. They meet up to do acid and coke together and kid freaks out because Hans taxidermy starts talking to him. He knows someone has dirty coke out there but he doesn’t know what’s in it. They get sucked into a whirlwind and he gets whiplash when she withdraws and disappears. He somehow meets up with Larry the guy that does taxidermy and he knows Han. Larry tells Kid the story of Han being there when her mom killed herself and Kid’s heart shatters for her. She starts to let him in and they start falling for each other and it’s deliciously toxic. He and Han is on the way to romantic dinner and Nic overhears a conversation she shouldn’t have and passes out and Han runs off to avoid convo. She swipes Kid’s stash of dirty coke and goes to numb herself and OD’s. Kid loses it and in his grief decides the only way she’s gonna come back is if he gets a taxidermy squirrel and make her mariachi band while she will wake up. She wakes up and they living together in bliss and the day of her sisters rehearsal dinner he brings her to a surprise. Couples therapy so they can work through their pasts to make a better future together. Great book

Hamster

This is Kids story about finding himself and someone that can match/tame his crazy antics. Johanna is trouble by her past from when she was a kid. Somehow they're able to tame each other and they work. I particularly loved the hamster references throughout. You did get a little more about Hawke & Nicole's story too from reading Hawke, which was a nice addition to see them very happy together. This was my first book that had heavy drug use and addicts, so it was really interesting to see it from their perspective of how they feel and why they do what they do.
