Wow!
Laughter + Tears + Surprise = GREAT STORY
I loved this book. I finished it two hours ago and I'm still trying to process it. The heroine's voice is so funny and true and heartbreaking, and I loved spending time with her despite the fact that she was going through some awful shit. And the storytelling, the perfectly paced reveals of Ingrid's past interspersed with the present work so well; tiny clues drop at just the right moments so that the story slowly pieces together, gathering momentum towards one of the most memorable endings I've read in a long time.
Also, the author uses the term "reverse claustrophobia" which IS a thing, guys. I experience this every time I'm in rural nowhere. *shivers*

This book has such hype reviews but to be honest I have very mixed feelings on it. I think that that's because I don't like Ingrid as a narrator. Like the storyline is compelling and very, very solid. The writing itself is strong. But the characters just...bother me? I felt like they were a touch one dimensional and I couldn't get attached to any of them. Like I didn't hate them and I was able to sympathize with a few of them (including Ingrid) at times. But at other times they just made me really angry.
I'm kind of hovering between a 3 star rating and a 2 star one. I'd probably rate this book a 2.5 if I could. I don't hate it. But I don't like it either. I don't dislike it but there were parts and aspects that I disliked.
But I will say that it had a 10/10 concept and in terms of sticking to that concept, it didn't disappoint.

This book is so well-written that I could ignore parts where it dips into the cliched. Which also helps that the book touches upon a lot of heavy issues.
Spoiler
It's also so well-written that I enjoyed the book even though I somehow didn't care for the romantic plotlines. I get the initial stuff with Isaac, but what's the attraction after? I liked the Tavik one and saw that coming but also liked how realistic it was when he was like, "you know this won't continue after camp, let's not pretend." I had forgotten so much about Isaac being a thing that I though the book was going to end with that last letter to her mom and not a prologue.
Loved the premise of this, but ultimately it dragged on and on. I just couldn’t get into it. It had way too many story lines happening and none of them felt complete.

I didn't know what to make of this book in the beginning, but it ended up being a really enjoyable read.
I like that we get snippets of Ingrid's life, growing up with her opera singer mother, while also focusing on the wilderness / survival trip
I like how different the ensemble cast were to each other, I know I would have got extremely frustrated with some of the tasks they had to conquer out there, so I felt their pain!
I really enjoyed the overall themes and messages that this book delivers, glad I picked it up on a whim!

I wanted to read something else that nobody else seems to be reading, and this was the perfect book. I chose this book without any expectations at all. And it turns out to be a great read for me. No spoilers though but the ending was unexpected and I cried when Ingrid went home after the camp ended and from there you understand why she went to the camp in the first place.
I picked this book up at a used book fair because of its high goodreads rating.
I started this book and it felt young and childish, but because of the good rating I decided to keep going. It was really good and I am glad I read it.
It is very reminiscent of Wild and I really enjoyed it.
