A very Vandermeer story, not my favourite one but still excellent
Good, especially at creating a pervasive sense of anxiety. Not an easy read, exactly, but enjoyable enough.

I think I just might not be the audience for Jeff VanderMeer's novels. While I find his premises intriguing, his refusal to follow through with a more traditional narrative structure is something I find frustrating. The novel's noir tone drew me in with a promise of intrigue, and while the novel delivered plenty on that, the lack of a concrete resolution ultimately left me frustrated. For those who prefer an emphasis on larger ideas concerning ecological salvation and our (perhaps nonexistent) role in that, this novel could be an appealing read. However, for those who are more narrative-driven in their reading as I am, this might wind up an ultimately unsatisfying read.
Interesting story with compelling themes, but didn't love the narrative voice.
Hummingbird Salamander begins with an intriguing premise: a woman unexpectedly receives a taxidermy of an extinct hummingbird, which leads her to a mystery surrounding a person named Silvina.
This novel has some great ideas and concepts, and some exciting scenes, but unfortunately it moves too slowly and the writing often drags it down. I was left wishing the book was half as long, and got to the point faster than it did.
This is the third book by VanderMeer I’ve read, after Annihilation and Borne. I enjoyed both of those books and I’d rate them higher than this one, so I’m still a fan. This book just didn’t work for me the way that I hoped.

Love this author's style and imagery. The beginning and end of this book are full of interesting tidbits, but the vast middle is too convoluted and cryptic to truly enjoy
A little slow to get going for my taste - but absolutely thrilling read!
Not VanderMeer's strongest showing, more of a page-turner than a thinker. Still enjoyable.
