Overall a frustrating read. At times I was tempted not to finish due to the disgusting way he wrote about girl and women characters, . The pacing was inconsistent and unsatisfying. I will admit to enjoying the magic system, but it's not enough to convince me to continue on in the series, nor would I recommend this book to anyone.

as well as the sexual assault that seemed to be included solely for shock value
A pleasant read - much simpler than Pathfinder and more enjoyable. I'm a little tired of the Gods coming to life in any respect in the current day - but even with that aspect, worth reading. 4 of 5.

Considering that I read the 3rd book of the series as the first going back and reading the 1st was worth it. The Mithermages series is a perfect mix of magic and the world we live in today. Orson Scott Card keeps the reader engaged throughout the novel and it’s interesting to see the different points of view of Danny and Wad as they both navigate their gatemagery. I do have a little bit of background since I read the 3rd book first, BUT I will say that it didn’t take away from my experience of the 1st book in the series. 100% recommend if you enjoy magical stories grounded in reality.
An ok book that cut off dramatically to leave room for a sequel.
Overall it was a good read but it just wasn't for me. I found it very predictable. I don't plan on reading the rest of the series.

I am so completely torn about this book. On the one hand, I love the concept, the world, and the magical system. I am a sucker for anything that deals with mythological creatures and gods living and working in the modern day. But...and it is a huge but... I wasn't compelled by the writing or the actual story. The flipping back and forth between worlds felt disjointed and I felt there were far too many segways into plot points that didn't really move the story forward.
For the portions that were actually compelling, the book got a solid 4/4.5 stars, but the other portions were a 2 star read a best, so I guess that leaves me somewhere in the 2.5-3 stars for the book.

2.5 stars.
