I wanted a silly little second-chance romance book and all I felt was anxiety 😭

+⭐ for being trans and talking about poetry

This was a fun read! There is great representation in this book. I love how there are so many young adult books focusing on LGBTQ+ youth and their experiences now. I think it's important that teens identifying with these communities see themselves in books.
I really loved the characters in this one. Charlie is awkward and shy and studious and is trying to keep a low profile. It saddened me that he felt like he needed to hide who he is, yet I am so glad that everyone he came out to at Valentine was so supportive.
Jasper and Charlie's dynamic was so good. I enjoyed reading about their interactions. This is a slow burn, so keep that in mind when you pick this up! It is done so well.
Overall, this was a fun story and had great character development. I truly enjoyed reading this book. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, this is one to check out!

I think this book is definitely for someone, but just not me. The dialogue was also kind of driving me nuts. I don't think any 16 year olds speak like Jasper, but I'm in my mid-thirties, so what do I know? Too many books I want to read so I am putting this one down.

This was such an incredible novel. I loved every moment with Jasper and Charlie. Charlie because he was so blunt and sarcastic with Jasper (who didn't seem to understand this) and Jasper because of his unwavering positivity. I loved watching them talk (or fight I guess) and I loved every interaction Charlie ever had with Blaze. He was by far one of the funniest characters and I throughly enjoyed it! Xavier too was an unintended favorite of mine. I love the name overall and finding out he's a really buff, kind, and smart guy was really great! Overall I really enjoyed the plot too. I didn't really care for the letter writing aspect part of it but the characters made up for these parts of the novel.

Ooooookay, I can already tell this one isn't for me. Being an audhd reader, I need things to largely make a certain logical sense.

The story is, at its heart, a romance. And boy howdy have I never met a more mismatched pair. Jasper is a narcissistic prick and I honestly don't know what Charlie sees in him. Seriously. All we're told is that they met at summer camp, kissed by a lake, and Jasper broke his heart irredeemably...two years ago. At 14. Further, why was Jasper (who is now 16) voted Sexiest Poet? And he's so hotshot of a poet that he has his own book, a cardboard cutout, and multiple posters that he's plastered all over their dorm room? Hmmmmm. Sus.

I liked the trans rep and Charlie's struggles. As someone who has supported others who questioned if they were going to get punished for going to the "wrong" bathroom, this visibility is much needed in literature today. That said...I highly question the viability of Charlie already having had top surgery in that two years when his family is poor, him deciding to go to a questionably anti-trans school just because his Mom did, and having a best friend that attends a school that doesn't allow cell phones. How do they stay in touch? How did they even develop a solid friendship when they can't communicate that often?

A shame because I was really, really looking forward to this.

I enjoyed it - very funny and cute! Knowing it was Genshin Impact Kaveh/Alhaitham inspired made me truly enjoy it and get a kick out of the subtle references here and there. However, if I didn’t know that and have the context, Jasper’s insufferable personality may have made me stop reading it. I loved the happy ending, but everything fell into place a bit too neatly and quickly for me.
