Nine seemingly unconnected strangers receive a strange piece of mail with only their names brandished on the letter. They start being killed via drownings, shooting, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc one by one. Will they figure out why they are being targeted and how to stop them before it’s too late?

For a thriller, this was a bit slow and too far fetched for me personally.

DID NOT FINISH: 42%

Not interested in the unnecessary use of the N-slur and R-slur. Did not pull off the multiple POVs well either.

Like all of his books this was so easy to read. I think that’s a good thing because I always enjoy them!! For some reason this one felt the most mature and well-architected, but there weren’t really any surprises. A couple of red herrings, a slight last minute twist. When we read about Caroline’s mother’s dream I knew instantly what this was all about / leading to. Getting to the end and actually digging into what happened, i personally had a hard time with the subject matter as a mom of 3 small kids. I think that means it was well executed just triggered me a bit and may not have picked up the book had I known (let’s be real, I would have). The letter/monologue at the end was just so painful to read and well written. Bummed it’s over but happy to put that sad story to bed at the same time.

The best part was the last section.

“You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

2nd 5⭐️ of the year.

I was almost immediately into this book. This was my second Swanson book after "Eight Perfect Murders," which was outstanding (not connected at all to "Nine Lives," but I highly recommend reading it before or after).

A sheet of paper with nine names on it gets sent out by mail to everyone on the list. There doesn’t appear to be any connection between the nine names besides each of them getting this letter. One of these nine is an FBI agent, which develops the story along. The book goes into the lives of each of the people on the sheet, who start being killed one at a time. The whodunit aspect is thick and challenging for sure.

This is very well written, captivating, with the ending tying the whole thing up in a bow. The last couple of pages, after the book is basically over, have one last twist, which could be argued as not needed, but it didn’t take away from the book at all.

This is quick and entertaining; go for it.

I would rather stand in line at the DMV than read this book again.
