I enjoyed the main characters and the plot but I felt like it was slow and that was the books downfall

We Rule the Night is EXCELLENT. Highly recommend it. (And jesus, what a gut punch of an ending.)

First off, I didn't expect to love this book the way I did. The first hundred pages were brutal and boring to get into and then I fell for the characters, and bam the book was finished.

The book is loosely based off the Night Witches from WW2, with some glorious sounding russian/fantasy names mixed in. It doesn't have the most visible plot, but honestly even without an obvious plot it is still fantastic.

I loved Linnés POV, she matched up to the male dominated side of the upfront soldiers. Having her strict following rule behavior compared to Revna's personality (which is freer and more chill), shows the difference between women and men in the military.

p.s Tannov broke my heart

Language: for being YA and military related barely any at all
Romance: n/a
Violence: killing (this is war), mention of rape, sexual harassment

overall, i enjoyed this book. however, i thought it could have just been a little more. it's not even that my expectations were very high, i actually had very few expectations going into it. it was more that while reading i saw ample opportunities for it to be what i had hoped it would from reading the synopsis. i wanted more badass female fight pilots defying the status quo, and less petty and annoying arguments between the girls just to have a turnaround for one character at the end. the action we got was cool, but limited in comparison to the pages of pointless fights. the details of the world and the war were quite vague and not expanded on as much as i would have liked (i'm still lowkey confused about the skarov). i found the magic system to be quite unique and interesting, though i'm still a little foggy on the details of it. the characters were kinda meh for me. the amount of secondary characters meant i really had no idea who anyone was, and i can't say linné and revna stood out too much for me either. once we got past their drawn-out rivalry though (which didn't even end in a wlw enemies-to-lovers,, smh), the friendship between linné and revna was great. if only we had gotten that for more than the last fifth of the book!! i can really appreciate the absence of any romance though. the ending felt quite abrupt too, and i can't say it was too satisfying.

overall, it was interesting but i just expected a bit more. it's a great concept that i just had different expectations for. this might be because it is a very simple story, and i don't mean that in a bad way at all. most ya fantasies are saving-the-world and vanquishing-all-evil kinda stories. this one, on the other hand, was just about the small part these women play in this massive war. it's just a story about these women, their acts of courage, and the challenges they face in a world that wants them to fail. in some ways i really enjoyed this aspect of the book, and in other ways i wish it had been a little something more.

I liked how fresh and unique this book felt compared to so much of the YA Fantasy I've read. It felt more like a dystopian steampunk than anything, but I liked the unique magic system and how intricate some elements of the world-building were. It focused on friendship and not at all on romantic relationships, which I also loved.

However, I do think the story felt slow. The plot and emotional depth of the relationships simply wasn't developed enough. I didn't really get why Linnea was the way she was. I didn't truly understand the threat of the Scaroff because the stakes felt distant. I felt frustrated at how static the characters were for 75% of the book. These are relatively small things, but I think if they had been improved the story really could have shone.

Ultimately though, it was an engaging listen and I definitely just sat at my desk pretending to do work while I earnestly listened to the last two hours. Excited to see more from this author!

This was a great book! I really enjoyed this book. I loved the plot of getting in trouble and then getting offered a way out of their punishment. I love how they are forced to work together and get along. I loved the military setting. I loved the magic twist. This author definitely writes very well. Hopefully I can read more of her books if she writes more. 4.5 stars.

Interesting, if a tad confusing at times. My biggest complaint is that it felt unfinished at the end. The story simply stopped.
